The Plot Thickens in Sleep #2
If it wasn’t obvious enough that Jon was somehow part of the strange happenings at night, it sure is now! Something has been rampaging through town, killing livestock. In issue 2 we jump right into the aftermath of a terrible accident. Jon is in his underwear on the side of the road, glasses broken, with a grizzly car crash right in front of him. In a moment of sheer panic he runs, realizing that he’s late for work.
That’s the fascinating thing about Jon. Among all of the weird stuff happening to him, he’s still worried about hi job. That’s a fascinating commentary on human nature though. We would do exactly the same. Maintain some semblance of normalcy in a situation that is anything but.
In Case You Missed It: Sleep #1 A Sleepy Little Town with a Scary Problem
Things in town are getting harder and harder to ignore though. Buildings and landmarks are destroyed, red graffiti all over the place. People are becoming more and more worried, afraid, and on edge.
The Importance of Red in Sleep #2
About that red graffiti. This series is in black and white with certain objects in red, in particular, eye glasses. Funny enough, when Jon travels to the Optical store, we see a whole lot more red in the furniture, rugs, and mirrors. There’s a connection here that isn’t quite clear yet. There are other objects around town as well: a random book on a bookshelf, ID badges, random doors. The funny thing is, Everyone else seems to identify the color as black.

The Suspenseful Story of Sleep #2
Zander Cannon is really building something awesome in this story. Jon is a very deep and relatable character. The way he fits into this society has something to with what’s happening to him while sleeping, and so do the eye glasses from the old mans shop. This is a really fun mystery puzzle that I’m excited to get more pieces of.
The art work is more appreciated in issue 2. It may seem basic and cartoonist at first, but there’s a dangerous charm about it. Zander’s panel framing and lighting is almost cinematic. The shading is excellent at providing suspense and the horrific images set against such a innocent background creates a wonderful contrast.
Overall Grade 9/10
Sleep is one of those quiet, underrated gems in the comic book market right now. This story feels like something special. The own, the people in it, and Jon feel so off and it makes for a interesting read. I want to know so much more about the red highlights, the relationship to Christianity, and violent nature of Jon. This is psychological horror at it’s finest ad I’m totally invested after this second issue!
