Opening the Doors

Johnny is an aging man who is going through therapy at an assisted living home because he has a brain tumor. His therapist Carla runs him through memory exercises using doors and what’s behind them to get him to unlock memories. It flashes him back to 1975, where he had his first love, Flower. She makes him happy, but she was going to be leaving for Georgia when summer started. On the day before she was going to leave, Johnny was going to ask her to marry him. But unfortunately, that doesn’t happen, as Flower is brutally murdered.

Johnny would go on to become an agent for the BAU, and hunt Serial Killers. He is of the belief that Flower was murdered by a Serial Killer that he named The Chatter Man. The problem is no one thinks the Chatter Man exists and the only person who ever got a glimpse of him was Johnny himself. We discover that Johnny doesn’t have much time left. Clara along with Buzz, who is Johnny’s friend and the Chief of Police, try to comfort and support Johnny. However, when the Director of the home Johnny lives in is found murdered. It brings the Chatter Man back to Johnny’s forefront. But is the killer even real?

It’s the Chatter Man

This first issue packs a mighty punch, starting with the story itself. The story takes you on a whirlwind ride. A tale of a man who went through a traumatic loss in his youth, that shaped the rest of his life. Now that his life and mind are failing him, we don’t know what is real and what is not. Scott Snyder is taking us on a psychological thrill ride, that has some incredible twists and turns. At the same time the story has a ton of heart and makes you truly care for Johnny.

The art in this book is fantastic. The penciling mixed with a watercolor effect is visually pleasing. Because of said watercolor effect the colors are less vibrant for most of the book, which encapsulates the feeling of despair that this story offers. The detail in the art is also super clean. The grizzly murder scenes have a flinching effect on the reader, and definitely make you feel the rage in the kills.
