The Writing:
This is my first introduction to Steve Foxe’s work as a writer. Likewise, this is my first introduction to these characters. I am very happy to say that I am incredibly pleased with both this writer and these new characters. It is no easy feat to introduce a whole new group of heroes to a long time comics reader and have the reader be endeared to them immediately. However, this is what Foxe and the creative team were able to do. Each character got their own unique moment to shine while the team dynamic was introduced. Starting off the issue with a set of old school villains in The Brothers Grimm was a nice touch as well. Another thing that I find so impressive here is the ability to set up a story that makes me want to come back and see what is going to happen next. I am intrigued by this team, these individuals, and the conflict moving forward. In short, I am very happy to have been introduced to the work of Steve Foxe.
The Art:
The art team on this book did a fantastic job showing off this team and the different power sets on display. The colors and layouts were beautiful, especially with Hellrune’s powers. The whole issue was visually interesting and a feast for the eyes. Ivan Fiorelli, Ig Guara, and Arthur Hesli put together truly fantastic art for this first issue that elevated an already impressive script to new heights.
Overall Grade: 8/10
A new team, an unfamiliur writer, and a team of artists I’ve never seen before had an uphill battle to win me over to this team of New Champions. As a fan of the original team of Champions, I admit I was skeptical of this group. I can say, without hesitation that this was a great first issue. New Champions #1 is a wonderful jumping on point that drops the reader into the middle of a story without making them feel lost. Great job to this team overall, I am excited to see where this story goes.
