Previously on String #1

String #1 introduced us to Yoon-Sook Namgung and her incredible abilities. Miss Namgung can see strings that connect people in 2 particular ways. First type of connection is sexual, those strings are blue. Second type of strings connects a murderer and their victim. These strings are black. Regardless how sensitive this information can be, Yoon uses her abilities to help. Hence why Yoon-Sook works as a consultant for the Police Department. Where she assists the crime/murder division as best as she can.

While at the same time they got acquainted with each otehr. Together they persued a black string across town. When they finally caught up to the man with the string, he blew himself up. No explination given.

Yoon has One Day

Yoon shows up to Detective Mayfield’s home with the terrible of news of her black string. Likewise, Mayfield’s detective skills kicked in and he started asking Yoon the right questions. Who could possibly want Yoon dead? Moreover, the problem is there are too many condidates. Yoon disclosed the different cases she’s currently working on. Interesting enough, they are not all for the police. Yoon has also taken on cases from civilians. Such as an unsolved murder case for the Lucky seven Gang. Or the murder of Litty Mondo’s pet.

The real mystery

After surviving an assasination attempt by a complete stranger, Yoon and Mayfield kept pondering for suspects. It was at that moment when Yoon revealed a concerning secret she held on to for the previous 5 weeks. Previosly, Yoon attended a retirement party for police officer. During the festive evening, Yoon couldn’t help but notice there was a man in attendance with 6 black strings surrounding him. Quite the the scare for Yoon. Following that discvoery, she proceeded to leave the party. Without any idea who that man was. Or if he was or wasn’t a police officer.

A lead on the case

At this time, with this information Detective Mayfield can track down who was in attendance at the retirement party. Maybe this way they can narrow down the names and figure out who’s the mysterious man with the 6 black strings. However, there’s Never a dull moment in Yoon’s life. Finally, after Detective Mayfield walked Yoon back home safe, it’s revealed that an assailant was hiding and waiting for her return.

How about the Art?

As I have said before, the art in String is amazing. For instance, the detailed precision in Carlos Olivares pencils speak for themsleves. Also, the bright color palette by Sara Colella fills up every page with life.

I give this issue an 8 out of 10

I felt this issue lacked cohesion after my first read through. The crazed woman who attempted against Yoon’s life came and went with no reason nor consequence. Maybe this will matter in a future issue. However, I found myself understanding more Yoon’s character after a second read. Yes, half the issue seems to go nowhere with the exposition for the additional cases Yoon is working on. But this is just a way for us to get to know to know her through the people she’s helping. For example, she helping a known local gang solved a the murder of on of their own. Secondly, she’s helping solved the mystery of who murderer a pornstar’s pet.

Clearly, Yoon is the type of person who’s willing to help anyone, judgement free. Paul Tobin is showing us why Yoon is a good person, instead of just telling us. That is rule number one in storytelling. Specially in a visual medium such as comic books.
