Darkseid is dead and The New Gods reign. The Highfather has tasked Orion with the unthinkable. Orion gives Mr. Miracle 7 days before his task is to be completed. Clocks ticking.
The New Gods #1 by Ram V (WRITER) Evan Cagle (ARTIST) Jorge Fornes (GUEST ARTIST PGS 1-4) Francesco Segala (COLORIST) Tom Napolitano (LETTERS) Nimit Malavia (COVER) crashes the “All in” Party.
This is a joint review with The EIC himself (Ken – ODPH Podcast) and yours truly (Matt from Hops Geek news)
The Artwork:
Ken: Fornes opens the books with a very impactful start. The two page spread at the Source Wall and Metron hits with the dire situation present. Once Cagle and Segala take over, New Genesis begins to shine.
Tension floods the pages with Highfather challenging Metron’s vision. Knowing what’s coming, Orion is the only one who can handle the task.
Cagle brings a viciousness to this book. The action sequences pop. Napolitano’s lettering shines during this point as well. The way he letters the order of Hightower stands out. The art team clicks on the emotions boiling with Scott Free and Orion. It’s high level work. Readers fully understand why once the closing page hits. The full page image of the latest god(?) is perfect for closing events out.
Matt: Let’s start with our special guest Jorge (Fornes). Jorge opens up this first issue with some intricate line detailing showing off the talent while also taking our breath away. Evan (Cagle) and Francesco (Segala) step in and paint a quaint and quiet version of New Genesis that causes us to forget all about Darkseid.
The team uses soft color palettes mixed in with some meticulous line detail making this opening issue beautiful. Tom (Napolitano) adds in some lettering detail making his mark on this issue that should not be slept on.
The Writing:
Ken: Ram V hits the New Gods with a question of Morality. The choice of how to handle the prophecy leads to an emotionally charged reaction. Seeing the range of Highfather’s cold response to Orion’s questioning of orders, the writing covers many aspects. It is a refreshing take that is difficult to pull off with Kirby’s creations.
There is an air of mystery that is haunts this book. Darkseid’s void is felt with every action. Highfather is ironically becoming more like the former Lord Of Apokolips. How this new stat quo plays out will be one to watch.
Matt: Ram kicks off this new run laying out the characters and making their motivations clear. The first pages are shrouded in a sinister air of mystery. I wasn’t expecting to be the target and being at risk. Ram V doesn’t shy away from giving the reader just enough to show there’s more. This is going to be a run to watch without a doubt.
Overall Thoughts:
Ken: 9.4. Metron’s visions thrust the New Gods into a moral dilemma. Ram V sets the pieces in place for a question of ethics. Cagle and Segala bring forth amazing artwork fitting for the Gods. Based off the cliffhanger ending, there’s no doubt there is more to this saga. Buckle in for an incredible ride.
Matt: DC’s All In continues to be a home run as The New Gods #1 is another stellar entry. The art and the story give us an exciting first issue and I feel as though this run may vital to All In. Make sure to pick up this issue and give it a shot you won’t be disappointed!
