The Story
With this wild Spirits of Vengeance run, it was nice to take a look back in the past of Michael Badilino, who is the host of the weakened spirit, Vengeance. From what started as Michael’s childhood that consisted of abuse from a drunk father, turned into us seeing him grow into a cop just like his father, without the violence and drinking. Actually, his father is ten years sober, and still a police officer. It seems his father is doing much better in his life and with his family until he comes into a situation involving Ghost Rider. That’s when everything changes for the worst for their family.
As I mentioned before, Vengeance is weak and he desperately looking to bond with his host, Michael. Vengeance is willing to reunite with his host by any means necessary, which showed very adamentaly in Spirits of Vengeance #2.
The Writing
I found this to be a nice pause in the exciting story that involves Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch uniting together to find out who the Spirit of Violence is. Sabir Pirzada does a fantastic job at making you feel the story and you find yourself emotionally invested from beginning to end. The tone was immediately set with the flashback to Michael’s childhood, and that tone continued throughout the book. I really enjoyed getting a look back at how Michael became Vengeance and how much heartbreak went into that.
The Art
The artwork is powerful all the way through Spirits of Vengeance #4. Sean Damien Hill, Brian Level, Jay Leisten, and Aure Jimenez gave so much detail in each panel, making each page more compelling than the last. Andrew Dalhouse did such a fantastic job with the colors, and made each scene hit that much harder. The juxtaposition of the bright colors with the darker details made each page come to life. Travis Lanham did a great job handling the letters, making each word pack even more of a punch. I think the artists really brought an entirely new depth to the already exciting storyline.
