Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the 62nd issue of The Amazing Spider-Man from Joe Kelly & Marvel!
The issue picks up where the last one left off. Spider-Man has been selected by Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Doom (yes, really) to be the defender of the Earth against the eight scions of Cyttorak. It’s a task that was previously taken up by Doctor Strange himself. Now it’s up to Peter to save the world again! So with that in mind, let’s jump into it!
The Amazing Spider-Man #62 by Joe Kelly (writer), Ed McGuinness (penciler), Cliff Rathburn & Mark Farmer & Wade Von Grawbadger (inkers), Marcio Menyz & Erick Arciniega (colorists), VC’s Joe Caramagna (letterer), Ed McGuinness & Marcio Menyz (cover artists) is a solid issue, but doesn’t have the same impact that the last issue did.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
The issue features Peter (with his new costume) training with Black Cat and a spectral projection of Doctor Strange in an effort to get a grasp on his new powers. It’s going decently, but obviously there’s room for improvement.
The issue feels like a little bit of a step back because the last one really hit you in the face with the gravity of the situation. The fact that if Peter doesn’t succeed the entire planet with suffer the consequences. But this issue doesn’t have that. Sure the battle continues with Peter and the other scions, but there’s no real sense of urgency. It doesn’t feel like the stakes have really been ramped up for it. It feels like just another patrol in NYC for Peter.
VOTE FOR THIS YEAR’S CHEERSIES!
The only interesting part of the issue is a conversation that takes place between Peter & Norman Osborn. I won’t go into details here, but trust me when I say it’s a VERY INTERESTING development. It’s not entirely unexpected, given the way Norman’s character has been written as of late. But to see it actually happen is a little bit stunning. We’ll see if it sticks though, and my money is on it won’t.
FINAL POINT: The issue is solid enough but doesn’t have the same punch that the last issue did. It feels like the creative team backed off the gas pedal. They might’ve accelerated the overall plot a little too quickly. It’s an issue worth reading if you’re a Spider-Man fan, or if you’re intrigued enough to see where the story goes. And this story is going to have implications for the comics universe in the new year. But for now, this issue feels a little bit like filler.
SCORE: 7.0 out of 10
