“DEADLY ATTRACTION! Gwen has a new archenemy to add to her list — the all-new BLACK TARANTULA! He’s got his web strung through all manner of crime in New York City, and it would be much easier to take him down… if it were not for the undeniable spark between them!”

Watching the spider

Last we left Gwen, she had received flowers and a note from the Black Tarantula given her an address where she was to meet him, but it didn’t say when. So, Gwen, being terrified to be in her own home, has decided to stay rooftop and watch for Black Tarantula’s arrival. Jessica Jones says this is all apart of his plan, to make her obsess over him, which worked according to Gwen.

VOTE IN THIS YEARS’ CHEERSIES!

When he finally shows up, it seems he’s had his eye on her for quite some time knowing she isn’t from that universe. After a scuffle between the two, we find out Black Tarantula’s true motivation for his villainous behavior.

I really like their chemistry as characters, and a small part of me wants to see them together. But Gwen is strong willed when it comes to doing the right thing as a hero, so I don’t see her falling into his web anytime soon. I could be wrong, though. If the Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider run has taught me anything it’s that I really have no idea what’s next as it’s kept me on my toes.

The Writing

Stephanie Phillips does another fantastic job in this exciting series! Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #7 gives a great insight into why Black Tarantula is doing what he’s doing and what he’s willing to do to achieve his goals. I’m really liking the dynamic between Black Tarantula and Gwen. It’s a different take on the usual Spider-Man villains and Spider-Hero dynamic. Another relationship I’m really liking is Jessica and Gwen’s friendship! I like that Jessica is so supportive of Gwen and Gwen is able to have someone to depend on after being alone in this new universe.

The Art

Von Randal adds a whole new depth to the story with him fantastic art. I had been loving the artwork of Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider, but I really felt he added so much more. There’s a whole new grittiness to the comic that I really goes really well with the characters and the story. The panel that show Black Tarantula and Spider-Gwen fighting were beautifully done and easily some of my favorite parts of the comic.
