Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue of Ultimate Spider-Man from Jonathan Hickman & Marvel!

This issue is a Ben Parker & Jameson centric issue! It’s an issue that feels like it might have taken inspiration from an episode of one of Dick Wolf’s television shows. So is it a hit? Or does it miss the mark? Let’s jump into it!

Ultimate Spider-Man #10 by Jonathan Hickman (writer), David Messina (guest artist), Matthew Wilson (color artist), VC’s Cory Petit (letterer), Marco Checchetto & Matthew Wilson (cover artists) is actually a very intriguing issue when it comes to the overall story arc of where things are going in not just the Spider-Man side of things. Because this issue has some big ramifications for the entire future of this universe.

As I said before, the main focus of this issue is the story surrounding Ben Parker & J. Jonah Jameson and their fledgling newspaper they started together. They’ve left the Daily Bugle and are striking out on their own after a bit of a disagreement with the owner of the Daily Bugle in Wilson Fisk (aka the Kingpin). Things have been going well for them so far, and the paper has a decently sized following. But they need to strike a bit of gold and publish a big story. And boy do they ever in this issue.

The issue doesn’t really have any action to it, but it works in this instance. It’s all hard hitting journalism from Parker and Jameson. And it’s a thrilling story from start to finish, no doubt about that. They’re on the trail of just who exactly bought Stark/Stane Industries, and it’s ALMOST impossible to figure out just who it was that did. Note I said almost, because they do figure it out. And I could spoil it for you and say who it is that has bought the company, but that’ll ruin the shock for you once you read the issue. Because it’s a HUGE revelation about who’s bought the mega corporation. And given how the issue ends I’m starting to feel validated about a certain character from a few issues back. Just saying.

My favorite part of this issue is the artwork done by David Messina who’s the guest artist on this issue. The artwork is so vivid and detailed that it feels like he took a photo and then put a filter over it to make it look like a comicbook page. And obviously the color goes right in hand with that, and Matthew Wilson deserves a ton of credit. Because the artwork and color just compliment each other so perfectly.

FINAL POINT: The implications at the end of this issue cannot be understated, and they’re HUGE. Business has picked up in a big way, and I feel like the big confrontation we’ve all been expecting between The Maker & his council and our heroes is approaching faster than we might’ve thought. It’s sure to be an explosive confrontation, and a tragic one. Because we know when it comes to Spider-Man that whenever something big happens, tragedy isn’t usually far behind no matter what universe we’re in. It’s an issue you’re going to want to pick up if you’re heavily invested in this new Ultimates universe. And if you’re not THAT invested, you should still pick it up because this feels like a turning point in the story. This is where things are going to change, and it’s going to be great to see where they go from here.

SCORE: 8.0 out of 10
