Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the first issue of the latest story in Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures from Daniel Jose Older & Dark Horse Comics!

This story takes place in the midst of the ongoing battle between the Republic & the Nihil. It’s the first issue of the series, and has a lot to live up to. The book fits in with all of the ongoing content going on with The High Republic. So without further introduction, let’s jump into it!

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures: Dispatches From The Occlusion Zone #1 by Daniel Jose Older (writer), Paris Alleyne (Illustrator), Michael Atiyeh (Color Art), Comicraft’s Tyler Smith & Jimmy Betancourt (Letterer’s), Jake Bartok (cover art) is a solid start to the series from Daniel Jose Older and the entire creative team.

The story revolves around finding out just what exactly is going on BEHIND the Nihil stormwall. It’s a force field that only those with the right equipment can get past. Republic ships can’t get past it or they’ll be destroyed. So in an effort to get an update on what’s going on century old technology is being used to hopefully bypass the wall.

MORE HIGH REPUBLIC!

The issue overall is fantastic, and a fun read if you’ve been keeping up with the various ongoing series. With various characters making an appearance, and featuring into the story it makes for a memorable experience. Daniel pens a fantastic issue that is complimented beautifully by the artwork that combines together for an incredibly fulfilling issue. There’s a lot going on in this issue, with multiple perspective’s being shown. But it never feels overwhelming, and flows wonderfully between each view.

FINAL POINT: Daniel Jose Older pens some of his best work yet with this issue. The artwork from Paris Alleyne compliments the story wonderfully. This issue is a must read if you’ve been keeping up with the various High Republic series from Dark Horse Comics. Even if you haven’t there’s something here you’ll enjoy. Overall it’s a great read and worth the pick up this week.

Score: 8.5 out of 10
