Steve Orlando Brows the 2099 Universe

In a surprising twist, this renaissance of the 2099 universe is blossoming into a great series! Steve Orlando has been cooking with some proven ingredients and adding a dash or two of his own here and there. It truly has been a blast to read and engage with.

Throughout Annihilation 2099 the foundations were being laid for what was to become Conquest 2099. Now we see these individual stories come together in a way that will effect the whole universe.

How did 2099 Get Here?

A Collision Course of Conquest 2099!

This story sets the paths of 3 groups on a collision course with one another: Dracula’s army, Araneons, and the heroes of Earth. Those heroes consist of X-Men, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and Nova (revealed to be Logan himself!).

Dracula seeks Conquest 2099 After the Pain of Loss

Orlando takes us on a fantastic journey as Dracula and his forces make their way to Domus Draconum to find it in ruin. In a world of safe light for Vampires, they were somehow burned by sunlight. When Dracula finds his daughter Lilith rarely hanging on to life, she fills him in on the mystery. Araneons, a race of brutal spider humanoids led by the most vicious named Spidercide, arrived and dominated them all with weapons imbued with UV energy. Dracula’s grief and rage set him on a path of bloody conquest!

How Will Earth React to a Conquest 2099?

On Earth, Spider-Man chases Junkpile into the borders of Oasis X. This leads them into a collision course with Cyclops and Phoenix. In the ruckus Spider-Woman arrives to inform them all that something has happened in the universe involving her race, the Araneons. During the explanation, Nova arrives and all hell breaks loose. He’s got beef with the Araneons and plenty of bad blood with the X-Men leading to a melee!

The Universe of 2099 Grows Through It’s Characters

The horror and science fiction themes coincide so well in this book. That has so much to do with Steve Orlando’s wonderful script as well as Roberson’s and Luis’s immaculate artwork. Dracula’s story and character is handled so well. He is a terrifying force of nature and yet feels so vulnerable and fragile. His love for vampire’s is unwavering, no matter who they used to be. He can seem so regal and caring and then go to terrifying warlord in a snap.

I fell absolutely in love with the idea of Logan as Nova in Annihilation 2099 #1. When he arrives here the tension and drama ramps up! The heroes of Earth clash so well, leading me to believe that they will only sharpen one another. Great conflict always breeds a good story.

The Art Definitely Conquers in Conquest 2099!

As stated before, the artwork is a huge part of this stories success. The way science fiction and horror are blended is done to perfection. I love the color palette as well and Dracula always sticks out in a good way.

Back on Earth the heroes and Oasis X are bright and dynamic. Each heroes design and color looks amazing and I can’t help but stay a minute longer on a panel before moving to the next. There’s just something enthralling about their designs and movements.

Everything Points to 10/10

What a fantastic beginning to the story of Conquest 2099. Steve Orlando continues to flesh out the 2099 universe. It’s so much fun! Most people would think that this is just a recycled use of well known entities, but it truly feels like something new and organic. I’m excited for more and if you love Marvel comics and are looking for something different, you will love it too!
