I need you to understand something before we go any further. Comics have always been an escape from reality for me. I have always had a soft spot for science fiction and strange worlds come to life on the pages of our favorite media. When I saw Convert’s cover, I jumped a the chance to read this. I was not disappointed.

Writing

John Arcudi is no amateur. He has written several comics that I have really enjoyed over the years. Convert has jumped directly into that list.

We are given access to our main character’s thoughts, via journal entries, as he is left the last man standing after an explosion kills his fellow astronaut explorers on an alien world. His journal excerpts are the “voice of the narrator” and a really clever way to tell the story with only Orrin and his environment.

ART

Savannah’s artwork is stellar. It doesn’t overcomplicate the alien landscape with too much going on. With Miguel’s colors giving the full alien feel, it truly matches the tone of the story perfectly and strikes a very clean balance.

As the story progresses, and we feel more and more desperate for Orrin, the color palette also adapts and lends itself to the building tension.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed this issue, even though there were a few smaller details that were left a little too vague. I look forward to the rest of this four issue series from Image. It stands alone as an introduction to Orrin, while also ending on a really great cliffhanger: a final splash page that will surely have you pining for more of Convert!

Final Grade: 8.5 alien fish out of 10
