The Spider-Meeting

Spider-characters everywhere! Spider-Society #1 starts with Gwen and Miles hanging out on a rooftop when they both get a text from Madame Web. It sounds pretty urgent, so Gwen and Miles race over to Madame Web’s house. Once they reach Madame Web’s house, we get to see all of the different Spider-people at play including Spider-Man India, Wed-Weaver, Hunter-Spider, Spider-Punk, even Weapon VIII. Curiously, there are a few missing such as Madame Web, Spider-Man 2099, and Araña.

Once the Spider-people come to the realization that they’re all missing, Araña appears out of thin air through a portal. She shows up worse for wear with a message; “they’re coming”. Almost immediately, the Spider-Society find out exactly who’s she’s talking about. The Sinister Squadron formulated an attack on the Spider-Society that caught them all by surprise. Finally, in the midst of the surprise attack, Madame Web shows up demanding the Sinister Squadron leave her home. But even Madame Web is impacted by the Sinister Squadron and somehow her powers aren’t working.

Even with this setback, Madame Web has a plan. Unfortunately, it involves leaving some of the Spider-Society behind. Now that the Sinister Squadron has who they want, the remaining Spider-people must follow a plan in hopes to get all of the abducted heroes back. Without spoiling the whole comic, there’s a couple of twists in there that have a horrible impact on the Spider-Society’s plans.

The Art

The artwork is exactly what you’d want from a comic about the Spider-Society! It has the energy of a Spider-Man comic with the bright colors and the incredible attention paid to the details. Something I really liked was with how many Spider-heroes there were in the comic, each one stood out in their own right. None of them felt watered down or made to blend in. Each character was drawn and colored so beautifully and with the perfect amount of drama.

The Writing

I have to say, I am really excited to see where this miniseries goes. The plot was exciting with a surprise attack from the Sinister Squadron, along with Madame Web’s powers not working, and not even mentioning the surprise twists in the comic. Something I really enjoyed seeing all of the personalities come out from the members of the Spider-Society through their own dialogue. I think it would be really difficult to write a comic about so many different characters who are so connected, but Alex Segura really did well with it. Personally, I would have liked more explanation on a couple things, but I’m sure that’ll happen in due time.

I give it an 8.5 out of 10
