What’s Up Comic Fans!? Rich here repping the NI Comics Bullpen and bringing you a fresh comic review. In my short time of writing comic reviews, you may have figured out I love the horror genre. I also seem to have an affinity for anthology comics as well. But what you don’t know is I absolutely love Godzilla.

For as long as I can remember Godzilla has been one of my passions. Even though Godzilla is my favorite, I love the world of Kaiju. So much so that I even enjoy Kaiju Big Battle (look it up on YouTube). So, when the opportunity came to finally review a Godzilla comic, it was on like Donkey Kong.

Godzilla Sons of Giants: Here There Be Dragons II #2 is written by Frank Tieri, art by Inaki Miranda, colors by Eva de la Cruz, and letters by Steve Wands. This book is published by IDW Publishing and edited by Jake Williams.

Let me stop gushing and let’s launch into this issue!

“This is What Actually Occurred.”

This issue opens with the Scandinavian tale of Beowulf, but the “true tale”. In this tale Beowulf is killed by a creature known as the Grendel. The Grendel is the Kaiju Hedorah. This story is told to Mortimer Lane by the “Monster Men”.

We learn that the “Monster Men” had a hand in the Hamilton and Burr duel because Hamilton threatened to tell their secrets. They then divulge a story about ancient Rome, where Godzilla, Hedorah, Mothra, and Rodan squared off. Before revealing that history is going to repeat itself, and if that wasn’t enough the leader of the “Monster Men” would reveal himself!

Alternate History

This story is very interesting. As it’s not just a Godzilla/Kaiju story, but also a tale of an alternate history. Using real history, and historical figures gives this story familiarity. Going from a Scandinavian myth, to post revolutionary war America, to a tale from ancient Rome, and back to America for a big reveal is ambitious, but it works.

Not only is the writing in this book great, but so is the art. Inaki Miranda goes from a beautiful Norse style open, to a more familiar comic style. Eva de la Cruz’s use of earth tones throughout the book, switching to a blue pallet only for the Kaiju showdown is genius.

The only negative criticism I have for this book is when the book opens the font is a little rough to read.  I get what Steve Wands was going for, and it does match the Norse feel. However, I had to go over a few of the panels multiple times to make sure I read it right. This is only for the first handful of pages, and then the lettering is great for the rest of the book.

Final Thoughts

Godzilla Sons of Giants: Here There Be Dragons II #2 is a fun read. It has a great twist at the end that has me hooked and I can’t wait for the next issue. Plus, Godzilla…enough said!

Final Grade: 8.5/10
