Father Vs. Son
Eddie Brock is now the ruler of the symbiote race, the King in Black. And the King in Black has declared war, the Venom War that is. Eddie only asks for two things: his son, Dylan, and his symbiote, Venom. The problem is that Venom is now missing after trying to bond with Dylan. Dylan and Eddie got a pretty horrible look at what happens when the other bonds with Venom, so they’ll stop at nothing to prevent that. To add to that whole situation, Venom showed Dylan all of the terrible things his dad did while being the host to Venom. So needless to say, Dylan is ready for war.
Time for War
In the beginning, Eddie crashes a fight night at the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation to announce that he’s going to war and will take down whoever stands in his way. Dylan, who is suffering from understanding how to stop his father from the fate he faces if he plays host to Venom, gets a visit from his future self. Future Dylan has a plan to stop it all from happening, but needs Dylan’s help. Of course, Dylan is terrified but what must be done has to be done.
Venom
Something I really liked about this was that we got to see Venom’s side of all of this. Venom tells about when he wanted to bond with Spider-Man, the most humble and kind host he’s ever had. Then he shows how Peter didn’t want to be host to Venom, understandably so. Overall, Venom feels he’s a machine of destruction. He hurts everyone he comes into contact with, which is a fair conclusion given his history. Dylan and Eddie think Venom is missing in action, but at the last second we find out that’s just not the case. Now with Venom back in the fold, and Eddie and Dylan ready for war, who knows what chaos lies ahead?
The Art
The art was dark, and gritty, and perfect for Venom War #1. I really appreciate the amount of attention paid to all the detail in each panel, particularly in the fight scenes at the arena. Something I really loved was how great each symbiote was drawn. They all looked so unique while meshing together perfectly.
The Writing
Venom War #1 gave you so much to work with while having a really nice flow to it. Each panel felt action-packed while still adding to the overall plot. Al Ewing does a fantastic job at keeping you hooked to each page while making you want to hurry up to see what happens next on the next page. Overall, the plot is compelling, to say the least. My only issue is that it was somewhat challenging to keep up with what was going on with Dylan and his future self.
All in all, this is an event that seems tailor-made for Venom fans, and it shows with the amount of excitement coming off of each panel.
I give this an 8.5 out of 10.
