What you may not know is I am a HUGE Horror fan. So when Ken M. and the NI Bullpen had a new horror story come across the wire, there was no way I was passing it up! 

What happens when you mix The DaVinci Code with a who done it thriller? The God List is the latest graphic novel from Storm King Comics.

Written by Steve Niles & Scott Hampton, with Hampton on art duties as well. Rounding out the creative team is Jennifer Lange on Colors, Janice Chang on Lettering, and Sandy King as Editor. Of course, like all Storm King Books Sandy King & John Carpenter (yes THAT John Carpenter) are your Publishers.

What A Crazy Night

The God List is the story of a bookstore owner from Greenwich Village, NYC named William Daily. One night after closing shop and settling in for a normal lonely night, his life is changed forever. A woman comes to his shop door and gives him a book before turning to ash. You know a normal Tuesday night in NYC. If that wasn’t crazy enough, that’s just the beginning! 

William is now a target of a shadowy cult, with a stranger, Lydia, as his only saving grace. Together, William and Lydia must go on an adventure to find out all they can about this very mysterious book with a very mysterious list. Did I mention they are being chased by this cult the whole time? They want this book at any cost including ripping out hearts, literally. The only thing that is crazier than that is the twists that occur at the end of this incredible ride.

From The Hand of God

The story that Steve Niles & Scott Hampton weave throughout The God List is one that keeps you guessing and wondering what will happen next. Just when you think you know what’s going on they take the opposite route making for some top-notch storytelling. Couple that with the watercolor painting style of Scott Hampton full of earthy tones reminding the reader of a past time and you have an experience that is very pleasing.

Final Thoughts

This book kept my interest throughout its 122-page story. It has a little bit of everything, some mystery, some puzzles, some horror, and twists galore. To say this book keeps you guessing is an understatement. Being a graphic novel has its pros & cons. 

The fact that you get to go on this wild ride in one sitting is a pro. However, I felt myself wanting more. If this was the opening book of a 100-issue run, and the story was drawn out more, I would be even more thrilled. Being that it is contained in one book makes parts of the story feel a little rushed. As a greedy reader, I hope these characters return and I get to revisit this world. They left me wanting more and of course that is always a great feeling.
