Rook Exodus #3:

With his escape craft now in ruins, Rook now finds himself on the run from the barbaric bear warden Ursaw. Joined with the wolf warden Dire Wolf, they need to find allies…and find them fast.

The Art:

Jason and Brad continue to build out this utopia like world that our characters are living upon. You know it is doomed and yet as we travel to every different domain and see the various other wardens you get a true sense of beauty and wonder. Showcasing the greens of the forrest or the wintry mountains, there are a lot of various landscapes that both creators nail down and show you the serene harshness of them all. Issue 3 allows us to also see more wardens and what creatures and animals they are attached too. Seeing the horrifying helmets of the “antman” and one who connects with spiders and then the tranquil stoic vibe of Carapace. Through their art you get a sense of calm amongst the chaos.

The Writing:

Geoff is able to cut through the sense of serenity we feel from the artwork by building up the tension for the war that looms on the horizon. He shows us the bond between Dire Wolf and Rook without diving into their past, and you get the sense from their characters of how close they are. With Carapace, both Geoff and Rob’s lettering allow the reader to feel how heavy the burden has been bestowed upon his shoulders and how old he is. Having seen one planet die and another in peril, you can’t help but feel the heaviness in his words when speaking.

Overall:

Rook Exodus #3 builds upon the anticipation the first two issues began as new players enter the board the team is hammering home how desperate our “heroes” are. The blend of art and colors creates a peaceful calm while the letters and character-building draft up the feeling of unease. Issue 4 cannot come fast enough!
