Be sure to check out my review of Wolverine: Blood Hunt #1! Enjoy!
Plans broken
Last where we left Wolverine in Wolverine: Blood Hunt, he found out an old mercenary from his past was behind the attacks aimed at him. The elite mercenary, Maverick, used the attacks to try to get Wolverine to join his side in this vampire war but proved unsuccessful. Wolverine, with the help of Nightguard, plans to investigate what caused the sun to be blot out and who’s behind it. But, as Wolverine’s luck would have it, they get attacked by a large group of vampires.
More Than One Villain
Of course, the group of vampires aren’t just any group of ordinary vampires, but a group of high-tech mercenary vampires watched over by Maverick using a drone. While being attacked, Wolverine calls in a favor to a CIA buddy to help put a stop to this attack. Maverick isn’t pleased with this but says it’s worth it if he’s able to bring Wolverine onto his team. Interestingly enough, it seems Maverick isn’t pulling the strings here, but having his strings pulled by someone else. Alyssa, leader of the Siren Sect Vampire Clan, has her teeth sunken into Maverick, figuratively speaking.
HVIC(Head Vampire in Charge)
After a successful bombing of the mercenary blood suckers, Wolverine gets word of who’s the mastermind the vampires worldwide takeover. It’s none other than the Daywalker himself, Blade. This comes as a huge shock to Wolverine and Nightguard, understandably so. Blade was known to Wolverine as a good guy, and the same for Nightguard. Wolverine reassures her that something isn’t right about Blade being the mastermind behind it all, but even he has his doubts.
Although Wolverine and Nightguard were shaken with the news, they still have work to do. They must save the civilians, take down the vampires, and get to the home base of the mercenary vampires. Work is never done for someone who’s the best at what he does.
The Art
I really love how grounded the artwork is. The dark tones that go well with the Blood Hunt event are very well balanced with the brightness of certain aspects, like Nightguard’s UV crossbow or gunfire from the mercenaries. The characters are drawn with such intricate detail which adds another layer of emotion to the overall story. You can see that the artists, Juan José Ryp and Guru-eFX, are having fun with this run and really showcasing their artistic talents.
The Writing
The story is continued in Wolverine: Blood Hunt #2 in an effortless way that shows how truly talented Tom Waltz is. The second installment is written with a lot of action and emotion that shows Wolverine as being authentic to his character in terms of doing what needs to get done, even when he’s struggling with unpleasant news. I also appreciate how Nightguard is written into the story. Her and Wolverine mesh so well together, which really surprised me.
Final Thoughts
The second installment matches the same energy as Wolverine: Blood Hunt #1. I really hope it continues to be this good because this run is something special. The creative team should be very proud of themselves for this one!
I give this a 10 out of 10
