The Story:

Blood Hunt is underway and Vampires have made their bid for power. With some of the Avengers taken captive and the rest of the team overwhelmed, Captain America calls in a team of Avengers young and old to help in the fight!

The Writing:

Jed MacKay is just a great writer. There is an ease on display here when it comes to getting inside the minds of different superheroes. Each Avenger’s internal monologue was unique and felt true to the character on the page. I will be honest, I was not looking forward to this issue. I am not a fan of tie-in’s, I feel like they derail the story being told. While I did feel like I was thrown into a story that I had no foundation in (I’m not reading the Blood Hunt Story), I forgot all about any confusion or unease because this book was just such a great read! It was wonderful to see Avengers from so many different eras of the team coming together to destroy a bunch of Fascist vampires.

The Art:

Carlos Fabian Villa and Federico Blee were a great pair in this book. The action was clean, the colors were dark and muted with the heroes bringing points of light. The vampires looked scary and the way they were dispatched was a delight. Each team member had more than one moment to shine but, the image of Quicksilver mowing through vampires while dual wielding wooden stakes is one I won’t forget any time soon! I can’t forget to mention the fantastic cover by Joshua Cassara and Guru-eFX! What a great image, Captain America standing center page, flanked by a new team and surrounded by vampires. Great work all around!

The Verdict: 8/10

I went into this issue without high hopes due to the fact that it’s a tie-in to an event that I am not reading. However, excellent character work and fantastic visuals pulled me through and kept me entertained. I didn’t care that I didn’t know the whole story, it’s just cool to see The Avengers tearing through vampires in fun and inventive ways! I’m really looking forward to the next few issues in this event, and I may just have to give Blood Hunt a chance after all…
