LAST ISSUES REVIEW

The Plot:

The mysterious shroud of darkness continues to grip London and those that inhabit the city as a party takes place where we meet Lucy who has taken an infatuation with Transylvania and a strikingly mysterious Count.

Meanwhile, Doctor Seward is troubled by Renfield and the continuous appearance of the name of Transylvania shrugging it off to coincidence. As the men meet for a drink laughing off the idea of a Vampyr killing the men on the boat, Lucy is calling out for the Count inviting him to her subconsciously.

Our dear Renfield meanwhile, is starving and begging his master for the taste of human blood as he is withering away. As night falls Dracula enters Lucy’s room leaving Doctor Seward and his daughter to find her in the morning peeling back the shroud of mystery upon London.

The Art:

Issue 2 shows us that Simmonds is the perfect match for this haunting tale. His art compliments the story which brings the reader deeper into the story pulling at you as though Dracula himself has a grasp upon us.

The standout scene for me is Lucy calling out for Count Dracula almost feeling him as he is reaching out for her. It works in stunning and creepy way to match the build up of this story.

The Writing:

James is weaving an excellent tale filled with intrigue, darkness, and mystery. The slow build up of the tale of the Count is bringing anticipation as we see him work through the shadows.

The writing in this issue is one of wonder and also feeding off of the reader anticipation. It works in such a delightful way.

Overall Thoughts:

This is working its way into a top 5 book of the year. The way Tynion and Simmonds slowly turn up the heat on this slow burn story creating a shroud of mystery and pulling us deeper into the lore. The pulled deep cuts such as Van Helsing into their story which makes long time fans sure to pop.

All in all I am really enjoying this story the two creators have seemingly fused into one mind as this is one of the most flawless first two issues to drop this year for a debut story.

5/5 Cigars.
