“The Eye Collector #4” Review – The Dream Man Came

The Run Down

At the end of the previous issue, writer Jonathan Ball left us all wondering about the fate of Nathan. Well, hold your breath no longer, as he’s a-okay… or is he? Or is this all just a dream inside the mind of a child seeking the truth? Come find out with me as we explore “The Eye Collector #4”!

The Writing

Just like in the previous issues, the writing here continues to go above and beyond. Continuing on issue #3, Ball continues the use of “Hush! Here Comes the Dream Man,” having it serve as the perfect segue at the beginning. However, here, its meaning in usage not only becomes clearer, but is layered over the character Clara as she’s invited into the haunting home.

In a letter to the readers, Chomichuk makes the wise decision to tell us about nightmares and the hints of truth they have. The truth of our individual realities and lived experiences. Without going into further detail, this really comes through in the story being crafted by Ball, no matter how disjointed it may seem. In my eyes, the disjointed feeling is done on purpose, as we’re meant to be seeing everything through the eyes of a child. To add to that, Nathan seems to be a child in a bad situation, refusing to see his reality for what it is. Ball’s crafting something truly amazing alongside Chomichuk, and I’m so excited to see where this ends.

The Art

When it comes to the art and colors of G.M.B. Chomichuk, they too continue to be truly incredible and unique. Upon looking at things at a deeper level, especially after reading the aforementioned letter, everything gains a much clearer focus. Whenever we dream, a lot of times things don’t make sense. We might see strange creatures or things might feel off or out of place. All throughout each issue, Chomichuk delivers on making things feel exactly like that: off and out of place. Floating heads fill the panels or a smile full of too many teeth might erupt from a blank face. Chomichuk has been crafting a masterpiece right under all of our noses and it truly seems like he enjoys it.

As for the lettering from Radchenka, he’s on a whole other level here. With each way a sound’s written or when dialogue breaks bounds, it will make you feel like the monster’s encroaching, with reality slowly fading. Despite this, he manages to restrain himself just enough to make the book easy to follow. That balance is more than enough to let me know he’s at the top of his game right now.

Final Thoughts

Once again, the entire team knocked it out of the park on “The Eye Collector”. The collector demands more eyes, and you should oblige. This is truly some of the best stuff coming out of the horror space right now, and Ball and Chomichuk should be proud of what they’ve concocted.
