Bad Thoughts #3 – We’ll Be Alright, Please Be Careful

Bad Thoughts #3 sees us pick up where we last left off. Jack now realizes his mentor has done nothing but lie to him. Jack misread Bill, and now people he loves are dead because of it. When your powers are useless against the most dangerous person in your orbit, the only answer is to try to disappear.

Writing

Ande Parks did a killer job on this issue switching it up a bit. There was a nice shift from a thriller style to a more psychological feel that happens midway through this issue of Bad Thoughts that I just loved. Parks takes us on a deep dive into Jack’s life and his mind when the gift that had given him so much has now taken everything he loved away. Jack’s spiral really was a deep look at his psyche and how someone with a gift like his handles the pain beyond a regular person.

The twist reveal in this issue was a nice touch as well. Parks crafts a version of Jack that really runs the gamut of emotions in this issue, and it marks a satisfying shift in his character development. It’s so interesting to see Jack at absolute rock bottom and consider how exactly Parks is going to pull him out of it. The concept of the story continues to grow and without some of the supporting characters around, Parks still does a beautiful job revealing more about Jack to the readers.

Art

Dave Wachter continues to perfectly capture the feel of this story in art. Wachter’s linework in the forest is simply superb with a variety of line widths establishing variety in the background. It’s this attention to detail that really makes Wachter’s work on this comic stand out when so many others would have let the background be more generic. Wachter captures the characters perfectly with the action hopping of the page with energy.

Because of the darker tone of this issue of Bad Thoughts Brad Simpson got to expand even more into the palette of cooler tones. The result is a mood that makes even the depression Jack is feeling seem like a character. Simpson perfectly captures the despair of Jack, while still ensuring the mood of the world beyond just Jack’s periphery.

Final Thoughts

Bad Thoughts continues to be a creative concept that utilizes beautiful art to tell the story based on a well-written script. This issue has surprising twists and turns that do a great job of setting up and building anticipation for the next leg of the story.
