The Run Down

Man oh man, is this series shaping up to be amazing! I always love a good villain story and watching Sarah go down this irredeemable path of darkness is a treat. In the previous issue, we witnessed her take her first swing at dark magic. If you for some reason thought that would be the end of it, then you got another thing coming! So come with me down the witch’s road as we look at “Sleepy Hollow: The Witches of the Western Wood #3”!

The Writing

Delilah S. Dawson continues to work wonders with “Sleepy Hollow” and Sarah’s story. Watching her go down this path is like watching a train wreck you can’t look away from. It’s so well-written and engaging that I couldn’t put this book down! It reminds me of the saying “like father, like son” except, in this case, it’s mother and daughter. In the strive to not be like her mother and protect her sister, she’s actively becoming just like her and it’s so engaging to see happen.

In sending Sarah down this path, Dawson creates a very interesting dichotomy between the two sisters. While one is obsessive in her protection, the other is wanting to live a life of her own. The madness that dichotomy creates is simply astounding and really makes you wonder how far some will go for the people they claim to love. With how intense the end and cliffhanger were, I’m both scared and anxious for the next issue!

The Art

Much like Dawson, Jose Jaro and Xenon Honchar absolutely worked their magic here! Jaro really brings a life to this series that I think would be hard for other artists to do in such a way. While reading, you truly feel the dread, horror and madness seeing things through Sarah’s eyes. Without giving too much away, there were a few pages in particular that I absolutely loved! Pages where we get to see the monster behind her actions. It was sheer genius how Jaro pulled this off.

Matching perfectly to create the tone were the colors of Xenon Honchar. To help depict Sarah’s violent madness, Honchar uses this beautiful blood red color with the black bleeding in, representing the darkness overtaking her. Other panels use a mix of blue, black, brown, purple, green and white to create this eerily gothic setting that looks truly spooky and amazing.

Final Thoughts

Dawson continues to lead a spellbinding team for this magical run! Everything from the writing to the art will keep you in a trance. If you’re looking for a great horror read, this is certainly up there!
