Catch up with Uncanny X-Men #30!
The Story
In the continuation of the “They Came from Beyond” arc, the aliens have made themselves known and in a BIG way! The Outliers and their X-Men mentors are living it up at the school dance, unbeknownst to them the chaos that’s happening right outside the door. Ransom, with Vig at his side, is going toe to toe with the aliens and realizes that he’s chewed off more than he can handle. Ransom isn’t the only one who’s now aware of the aliens as Nightcrawler’s date with MacKenzie was so rudely interrupted with their abduction. While Nightcrawler and Ransom are plenty strong on their own, they’re no match for these unwelcome guests.
Meanwhile, at Graymalkin Prison, Monet St. Croix is getting to the bottom of what exactly has been going on behind closed doors. The prison is above a lab, but not just any lab. It’s a lab that’s pursuing the task of making Wovlerines. Just when you think the prison couldn’t get even more sinister, Gail Simone says “hold my beer”.
Alongside this exciting continuation, we’re gifted with a story from Marieke Nijkamp honoring Disability Pride Month! Side note, Marvel, if you’re listening, I need so much more of Marieke in these stories. Anyways, Marieke gives us a glorious team up of Daredevil, Misty Night, Finesse, and Silhouette who are on the hunt to find Colleen Wing. This is an exciting matchup and has excellent chemistry between the team. Plus, I’ll always take whatever I can get of these incredible characters.
The Art
In the first story, Jim Towe and David Baldeón do a fantastic job at capturing the terror that comes with an unwelcome alien race taking over your town. The aliens are horrifying and menacing, so props to Ransom for running into that head on. Matthew Wilson makes the story feel larger than life with his work on the colors, bringing a beautiful vibrancy to the story. There’s so many contrasting panels that showcase warmer colors juxtaposing the cooler tones, that each page is nothing short of stunning. Clayton Cowles puts in the work on both stories, perfectly capturing the tones and the dynamics of so many different characters.
In the second story, Daredevil’s powers are on full display and I love how Andrea Di Vito and Erick Arciniega illustrated it. Along with that, we see a few characters we don’t normally get to see, and the artists made them beautiful, powerful, and absolutely perfect.
Final Thoughts
The “They Came from Beyond” is SO much fun. This is what I love about comics. They’re weird, they’re out of this world, and they’re fun. That’s something I’ve always appreciated about Gail Simone’s writing. With this issue, we’re gifted with a second story by Marieke Nijkamp that I’m very excited to see continue! All in all, this issue was a blast from beginning to end!
