The Story
After the wild Who’s Been Sleeping in My Bed story arc, most of the X-Men are back at Haven House and the Outliers are back at school where they belong. It seems like everyone is finding their new normal. Gambit has taken on the father figure role to the Outliers, Nightcrawler’s relationship is blossoming, and even Wolverine is volunteering to chaperone the school dance. Things seem to be falling into place exactly where they should be, which can only mean one thing: chaos is around the corner. If you’re familiar with Gail Simone’s writing, then you know that there’s absolutely no way you’ll ever be able to guess what she’s going to do next in her comics, and that rings true here. I never suspected a dose of aliens would make their way into the X-Men’s lives, yet here we are!

Meanwhile, back at Graymalkin Prison, Warden Corina Ellis has been taken off her high horse and is now in the hospital and soon to be in jail, if Banshee has his way. Monet has taken control of the situation and wants to help the mutant prisoners any way she can, but that will take some time. The prisoners are already chomping at the bit to get out of the prison, but Monet is ready for any backlash that comes her way.
In Uncanny X-Men #30, there are quite a few things that were set up for future issues. Obviously, aliens are a big one, but there’s also something interesting happening with Ransom that I’m nervous but excited to find out more about. Simone, once again, lays the groundwork for quite a few things to come to a head, and I am very excited to see where it all goes.
The Art
Rogê Antônio joins the creative team along with Matthew Wilson and Clayton Cowles. Antônio understood the assignment and went to town on the artwork, and we all benefit from it heavily. Where I think he excels the most is in the action scenes, which put the reader right in the middle of the action. Showing just how much these characters pack a punch, Antônio leaves no details untouched on these pages. Matthew Wilson brings great depth to the pages with his work on the colors. Each different setting has its own color set that captures the tone of the story masterfully. Whether it’s the school dance, the store that Gambit and Calico visit, or the prison, there’s an energy in each that allows the reader to feel the tone perfectly.
Final Thoughts
If there’s one thing you can say about this comic series, it’s that there’s not one single boring issue in the run. Gail Simone gives each issue its own light to shine and brings so many different tones to every one of them. It’s something I really appreciate because it feels like every issue is memorable, and there’s something to love in every one of them. In this issue, Gail Simone is setting up for what seems to be some exciting stuff that I can’t wait to see. There’s also some great dynamics between the characters that we get to see grow, and even some being pulled away from. Gail gives the reader so much to work with, and so much to theorize on, and that’s exactly how I’ll be spending my time until the next issue drops.
Overall Grade – 9.1/10
