In the previous issue, writers Matthew & Mark Elijah Rosenberg introduced us to this insane future where the robot apocalypse happened. Not a single human was left alive… or were they? We follow a robotic Abraham Lincoln as he works not only to uncover what’s truly happening, but also his own humanity. Does he succeed? You’ll have to find out in this week’s issue of “If Destruction Be Our Lot”!

The Writing
Building on from the intrigue introduced in the previous issue, brothers Matthew & Mark Elijah Rosenberg delve even deeper into this world, showing us that there really seems to be sinister things at play. Without going into spoiler territory, I feel as if this story can so far equate to the trials and tribulations of the working class and minorities in modern society, being dictated by the ruling class. Within that messaging comes so many new layers, such as themes of oppression, rebellion and the ruling class being more machine than human.
That, even more so than the previous issue, makes this book feel supremely human. As humans, we do our best to do things like looking out for our fellow man, digging up the roots of evil and just trying to do what’s right. That, I feel, is exactly what the Rosenberg brothers are trying to do with “If Destruction Be Our Lot” and they’re passing with flying colors. I can’t even find the words to describe just how good this series so far is. As a side note, I just have to add this issue gave me arguably my favorite character in Speedy! As a character who’s selfless and brave with a touch of whimsy, he adds a very interesting layer to this already intriguing story.

The Art
The artwork and colors here from Andy MacDonald and Francesco Segala was just too good and insane to comprehend. Every inch of MacDonald’s pencil work was expertly done with levels of detail that’s very rare to come across. He struck this brilliant balance of intense, thrilling and ominous, giving things this almost sci-fi horror vibe.
As for the colors from Francesco Segala, he perfectly matched MacDonald’s vision. The way he did the lighting is something that can only be done by an expert in the field. It truly helped to heighten the moments of suspense, terror, drama and action. I particularly loved his usage of red, making something that highlighted who or what was evil while simultaneously having it come from a light source in the setting. Absolutely stellar work from both MacDonald and Segala.
Final Thoughts
I already require the next issue of “If Destruction Be Our Lot” to be in my hands. This issue continues an already going trend of the Rosenberg brothers, MacDonald and Segala creating something truly once-in-a-lifetime. This series could really teach us a thing or two.
