It’s My Fault

The Reaper is an independent comic series created by Charlie Wilson. Within this story, you are impacted emotionally on various levels. The beginning of this issue takes you to a lovely home with what seems like your typical everyday family. But that is not the case at all. The father of this family is a “demon slayer”. Which is brought up fairly quickly, within a few page turns.

Another creative piece to this story is the presence of a helpful spirit or power source, Angel. A very caring character that only wishes to help to defeat the demons that have arrived to harm this family. Which is something I know I would want or need if my house were under an evil attack. But there is someone from this family who is missing, and Angel is sent off to retrieve said person.

That individual is none other than the oldest of the family’s children, James. He is away at college in the middle of a very serious game of basketball. Tempers flare as Angel attempts to get James to leave the game and head back home to help his father. Yes, James is also a “demon slayer”. It is seemingly a family affair. But it is when they arrive back at his family’s home that your emotional roller coaster sends you into a barrel roll!

Things didn’t work out as planned regarding James’s father fighting solo. And once seeing the carnage left behind, James immediately starts to beat himself up emotionally. Which is very valid considering the situation James arrived at. He wholeheartedly believes that it is his fault things turned out the way they did. Causing him total emotional distress…

The Writing

Charlie Wilson has created a great story with Reaper. The dialogue between characters makes the emotion behind the panels capture your attention. Causing you to ponder back on times within your past that you have also witnessed or felt such emotions. The plot of this story is also easy to pick up on and to follow. Reaper shows true promise to be an amazing independent story.

The Artwork

Giulia Gualazzi & Carlos Eduardo together do astonishing art to supplement the writing from Charlie. The pencil work is so smooth and defined, making it easy to look at. The attention to detail within the art is spectacular! There is a panel on the first page that shows a shadow of a house plant that in any other comic would not have been thought of. And the coloration is just as captivating as the pencil work. The colors selected are darker in tone to help assist the theme of the story. But in contrast, when there are spiritual powers being used, brighter colors are displayed to brighten the panels. Beautiful work!

My Thoughts

This debut issue of Reaper really helps solidify the story as a whole. This is what should be expected within a first issue. But the delivery of the plot and development of the characters make you want to read more past the end of this issue. Great storyline, padded with amazingly done artwork, truly makes this a story worth reading. Be sure to visit the link below to snag a copy of Reaper to enjoy!
