Reward For a Hero

Issue four of this six-issue mini-series is upping the intensity of the story. This issue is a continuation from issue three, taking off without skipping a beat. IronClad Comics has a gem of a debut series for their independent publishing company. Now let’s get back to the story of The Warden.

The beginning of this issue takes us to the police station, where Emma is being interrogated for her part in a vigilante sighting. It is in this moment that you get the feeling that she is pro-vigilante. After seeing The Warden in action and not sensing any danger other than criminals, she has a hardened respect for The Warden.

The FBI is completely focused on apprehending The Warden. So much so that you get this suspicion that the two agents working this case are not “just” FBI. It is a feeling that they are part of some anti-vigilante task force that specializes in taking down not only vigilantes but persons with special abilities. And this suspicion continues throughout this issue.

I mentioned in my previous review of issue three that the tone or feel of this story is that of Daredevil. Which is further cemented in issue four. Our main character, Henry (The Warden), is working hard to protect the city of Detroit. So much so that he is trying to recruit a “man in the chair”. That person happens to be his priest.

We see this issue end with a high-tension situation for Henry. He is baited by the FBI agents into a mock crime and is subdued by tactics that he has never dealt with before. A standoff ensues, causing Henry to run from the authorities. After evading the agents and their police backup, Henry is knocked unconscious in the Detroit snow. Leaving the story on a cliffhanger of what will be next for The Warden. Will this close call be enough to make him lock away his Warden disguise for good after just starting? Or will this fuel him to work harder at protecting the city he calls… Home.

The Writing

David Timm Jr. & Cody Karamol have given us four solid issues of The Warden. Each has been perfectly written and mapped out to tell this story seamlessly. The dialogue and narration make you think deeper into the story. Causing you to start to develop your own judgement of the characters and question the direction of the plot. The writing is exceptional and makes me wish this series were more than six issues.

The Artwork

Matthieu Pereira & Roman Stevens continue their amazing work on this story. Bringing to life the mystery and tension from the dialogue. Dark tones and rough, gritty pencil work accent the storytelling perfectly! So many details are thin the panels of this issue and all of them attract your attention!

My Thoughts

Issue four of this mini-series is exactly what I was hoping for! We finally get to see the protagonist and the antagonist collide. You are given just enough information within the storytelling to grip your attention and not let it go. Issue four is available TODAY on the IronClad website (link down below). Now is your chance to get ALL four issues of this amazing limited series. Make sure to subscribe to the IronClad Kickstarter to gain early access to the remaining two issues to come.
