Sal Buscema: A Comic Book Legend

Published:

Sal Buscema is a legendary comic book artist. In an inevitable circle of life, the comic book community has lost Mr. Buscema. On January 23, 2026, the legend passed away just three days shy of his 90th birthday. As the community mourns this loss, let’s take a trip down memory lane at the astonishing life and career of Sal Buscema.

Who Was Sal Buscema?

January 26, 1936, Silvio “Sal” Buscema was born to his Sicilian parents in Brooklyn, New York. Sal had three other siblings, of which he was the youngest. He had a sister (Carol), and two brothers (Alfred and John). John would go on to become a celebrated comic book artist just like Sal.

It is noted that Sal would often give credit to his brother John as his inspiration to pursue art. Among his inspirations were Hal Foster, George Tuska, Robert Fawcett and Norman Rockwell. In 1955, Sal graduated from the High School of Music & Art. From there he would follow his brother John into the comic book industry.

Buscema’s Pursuit of Comics

Sal struggled to find work within the industry like so many beginners do. Ultimately resulting in him working for J.R. Wood and Sons, a jewelry manufacturer. While working there Sal would be drafted into the U.S. Army in 1956. His Army classification was an “illustrator” while he served at Fort Belvoir in Virginia for the engineer division. Sal worked on training aids and film strips before being discharged at a rank of Specialist 3rd Class (Corporal).

Upon his discharge, he was blessed with a job from a friend he met in the army. Sal was creating illustrations for various agencies within the government (Agriculture and Defense). Though this was good work, it was not the career that he was truly after. His brother John phoned him in 1961, inviting him to come to New York City to work along-side him (John) at Alexander Chaite, Inc. (an advertising firm). Sal had a few more minor jobs before getting his big break with Marvel Comics in 1968.

Buscema At Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics brought Sal on under his brother John, who was already an established artist. Sal spent the better part of a year practicing and teaching himself how to use the Marvel Comics Storytelling Style. While majority of the time his brother John would give him some very harsh criticisms. After several attempts, Sal became a decent penciler, even though his heart was on the ink side of the comic book production. Sal would then draft sample pencil pages that he would send off to the Editor-in-Chief, Stan Lee.

Stan Lee was amazed with what he saw from Sal and brought him further into the Marvel family. Still coming across hurdles when it came to projects, till Sal got the call in June of 1968 for his first Marvel project. His first work was a Western feature “Gunhawk,” just ten pages. Sal’s first published work was issues four through seven of “The Silver Surfer” in 1969. He did the ink work over his brother John’s penciling for those issues.

Shortly after working on “The Silver Surfer” Sal would get another big project, “The Avengers.” This is the project that sent his career sky rocketing. Sal would then become one of the most sequential artists in the industry for the next thirty years. Opening so many doors to phenomenal projects…

Buscema to DC Comics

Sal spent the better part of two years (1997-1999) working for DC Comics. He worked on the major characters and stories. Sal would later recall his time at DC Comics as a “fixer.” Sal was tasked with looking over other artist work with the intent to fix or “tweak” the final product adding his own personal touches.

Prodigal Son Returns

Sal would ultimately make his return to Mavel Comics in 1999, staying with them through 2011. He worked on a multitude of projects during those years! Sal started on Incredible Hulk and made his way working on a various number of Spider-Man themed titles for the remainder of his time at Marvel.

Buscema’s Impact on Comic Books

As I have stated before, Sal is a legend within the comic book community. His portfolio of titles that he has worked on is monumental! He is the individual who penciled and/or inked the panels of famous comic runs that helped shape reader’s lives. I personally have a good amount of his work within my collection. Which makes writing this article in remembrance of him a true honor. It is always a gloomy day when the comic book community loses one of their own.

I do have a favor to ask those of you reading this article. If you are older and own titles that Sal worked on, take some time to flip through those panels once more. Furthermore, if you have children who are also into the collecting of comic books, take time to share Sal’s work with them as well. Too often the current generation can get wrapped up in the present production of comic books, not realizing the creators of the past who paved the way to comic books of today.
