Catch up with Titans #30!

The Story

The Titans have temporarily gone their separate ways to deal with the multiple different things happening in the universe. Nightwing and Raven headed to Gemworld where they were promised a wonderfully warm welcome, but have received anything but. They’re in the middle of a fight with Jinx when Raven comes up with an idea to help involving Tara Markov.

They’re not the only ones going through their own tribulations though. Donna Troy and Roy Harper have responded to a distress call back on Earth just to walk into a trap by Grail, daughter of Darkseid. Grail is pulling no punches and plans to take Donna and Roy down by whatever means necessary.

All of this is happening while Cyborg is busy with the Omega Tournament, and the team has no idea how he’s doing or if he’s even alive. There’s so much going on simultaneously and the team is running on fumes.

The Writing

John Layman continues to keep the energy at an alltime high throughout the team. Each character is dealing with their own situation and it seems the team just can’t catch a break.

After the explosive issue we had last month seeing Cyborg in the Tournament, we see none of Cyborg in this issue and the characters are left not knowing how he’s doing in the tournament. So there’s a looming feeling of uncertainty throughout the team of not knowing what’s to come, which Layman handles very well.

The Art

The artwork is as exciting as the story itself, which is saying something. Pete Woods is able to capture the intensity of the fights the Titans find themselves in through the artwork perfectly. With the back and forth switches from Donna and Roy to Nightwing and Raven, we see two different tones of scenes. Gemworld, with the purples and pinks of the world and to Earth where the colors of the fight match the tone of the dystopian and dying world. Woods makes it very clear how different these fights are, but how they both are deadly to the Titans. Alongside Woods is Wes Abbott, the letterer of the comic. Abbott is very consistent in his high quality work, and Titans #31 is no exception.

Final Thoughts

The heat continues to rise in Titans #31, and gives a great look at the devastation that’s going on outside of DC K.O.!
