“Ujaigami”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #14 written by Gene Luen Yang is a continuation from issue thirteen. This story begins inside of a court room where Lao Ban is on trial for murder. In the audience is someone who you would not believe, Leonardo. As the trial comes to a close, our mysterious ally, Ujaigami, from issue thirteen crashes in through the ceiling to “rain” down his own justice.

The Ninja Turtles are baffled about Ujaigami. They only know that he calls himself their ally. Their enemies are his enemies. With this knowledge the Turtles decipher that Ujigami is going to be targeting their rogues. The Turtles recruit help and split up to do the unthinkable… protect their foes.

The setting then shifts to the base of the Foot Clan. This is where our action picks up. A fight ensues but Ujaigami is not present… yet. Once he (Ujaigami) does arrive to eliminate the Foot Clan; however, he accidently attacks Leonardo! For those of you who did read issue thirteen, you will understand why Ujaigami is hit with a rush of emotions and flees the Foot Clan compound.

It is at the end of this issue that our Ninjas are back in their sewer reflecting on the events that just took place. While bandaging their wounds, and bickering as brothers do, a presence arrives in the sewer. A presence the Turtles have not truly felt in a long time. Once the individual reveals theirself, an overwhelming wave of emotion takes over the sewer.

Artwork

The art by Freddie E. Williams II in this fourteenth issue of TMNT is stunning! The way he pays attention to muscle definition deserves a chef’s kiss. The accent lines combined with the shading to deliver astonishing panels over and over again is nothing short of amazing. His attention to the minor details for surrounding accents within the panels is spot on as well, making them look as realistic as possible. Andrew Dalhouse deserves his flowers as well. The methodical way he chooses and blends colors to really capture the essence of Freddie E. Williams II‘s writing is so beautiful.

My Thoughts

This issue is a spot on continuation for this story arc. Gene Luen Yang‘s ability to continuously build each character’s story; on an individual level as well as a team is elegantly done. Mixed with the amazing art by Freddie E. Williams II and Andrew Dalhouse truly brings justice to these panels. The dialogue is so smooth, with perfect transitions and no hiccups while reading. This current run of TMNT after fourteen issues is proving to be another great series. I personally already collect this arc, and I’m not disappointed! Go out and secure your copy of this amazing story, and while you’re at it, grab all of the thirteen back issues if you don’t already have them!
