Ultimate X-Men #23: Shocking Twists Are Finally Revealed

Published:

22 issues of Ultimate X-Men have laid the foundation for this. Peach Momoko has been building this manga-style story for the Ultimate Universe, and now some of the threads are finally tied up, and we begin to get some resolution.

Writing

Momoko continues her signature style in this issue. With the penultimate issue, we finally see some of the storylines involving Hisako and other characters beginning to resolve. While the writing is well done, it’s easily overshadowed by the beautiful artwork. If you’ve been following along with the Ultimate X-Men stories so far, you know that they read as more of a Japanese horror manga-style comic than a traditional X-Men comic. While coming into the series knowing very little about the style, Momoko’s work has encouraged me to try out manga in this style. Momoko does a really good job of choosing the right words without being too wordy. This issue in particular, she picks her words well and lets the art add weight and volume to them.

Art

As with anything Peach Momoko has worked on for Marvel, the art is where she really shines. Page 24 of this comic really blew my mind. Many artists will use bright colors or other tones to create a dreamlike state, but Momoko does amasterful job of using cloudy colors of grayscale to show off the emotion of the moment. Her pastel watercolor-like art continues to amaze in the same way it has for the entire run

Overall: 8.5/10

The story has been really fun to read throughout this series. I’ve liked watching Marvel cut Peach Momoko loose to see what she can do with full control. It’s been fun to watch someone whose primary medium is visual art continue to grow as a writer throughout the series.

Until next time, may your pulls be magical and your multiverse remain stable.
