The Ultimates #19: A Brutal Cost For Devotion

Published:

The Ultimate Endgame is here, and The Ultimates #19 keeps the wheels spinning.

**Author’s Note**
Marvel Comics notes at the beginning of this issue that issue #19 of The Ultimates takes place after Ultimate Endgame #1. Therefore, be aware that this review may contain SPOILERS for Ultimate Endgame #1

Writing

This issue is such terrific work from Camp. It feels like a camera zooming in and out from the big picture to a close-up detail. We start with the fall of the Triskellion, and then the roller coaster takes off from there. Camp takes us back to the larger conflict in the Ultimate universe, then zooms in on the relationship and connection between Ant-Man and Wasp. We see the backstory of how Hank and Janet’s relationship came to be as the greater conflict unfolds all around them. Despite taking place after Ultimate Endgame #1, Camp beautifully lays the groundwork for the remaining issues of The Ultimates and Ultimate Endgame as this grand epic begins to wind down. With the last few pages of The Ultimates #19, Camp even manages to steal a little thunder from Ultimate Endgame #1 with a pretty major reveal.

Frigeri must have really had fun with this issue of the Ultimates. The back and forth between various scenes and settings allows him to bring out his full color palette on this issue. Bright hues and the darkest of blacks highlight a wide variety of colors present throughout the issue. The best thing Frigeri has going in this run is an innate ability to know what colors to use to set the tone. Camp’s words are well written and set the tone but Frigeri seems to know just what shades, shadows, and colors to use to help capture the moment. On top of his use of colors, Frigeri has a great attention to detail from capturing the stubble on Nick Fury’s chin, to conveying feeling and emotion of the character we see revealed at the end.

Overall Grade: 9.5/10

I love this comic. I think Frigeri and Camp make such a great team and set up the tail end of this run so well. Anyone who has been paying attention knows that Ultimate Endgame beckons the end of the Ultimate run but Camp and Frigeri manage to create a comic that is insanely enjoyable to read, contributes to the overall story arc, and stands on its own even when it’s not the biggest Ultimate release of the week.
