Skinbreaker #4:
We’re officially halfway through this limited series and boy is Skinbreaker breaking me in so many ways.
First, the full circle nature of the tribe’s ways with Anok now facing the ultimate challenge from one of his own is something that is as heartbreaking as it is fascinating. A way to keep the tribe strong and weed out the weak is also something that ignores all the intangibles of life.
Next, the relationship between Anok and his son is something parents everywhere can feel deep in their soul. His son may not be strong, but Anok knows that he is still meant for greatness and it’s beautiful how he’s fostered that within him.
And finally, Anok’s willingness to sacrifice himself for the great good is something we don’t see very often, especially these days. Being selfless is a quality that is nearly extinct in our real world.

Creative Team:
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: David Finch
Color Artist: Annalisa Leoni
Letters: Rus Wooton
Publisher: IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND ENT
The Art:
Finch took years to finish this series and it shows. He’s always been such a master at details and such a perfectionist and it really pays off here.
The facial expression have so many layers and heart to them as Anok, his son and his wife all go through the stages of life.
Then there’s Finch’s classic two-page spreads. Wow, they are nothing short of breathtaking, especially during the epic battle scenes.
MORE: SKINBREAKER #2 – A Heartbreaking Passing of Leadership
The Writing:
The issue starts off fast and furious with the challenge to Anok’s leadership, which means a battle to the death. The conversation between Anok and his far stronger challenger during the battle is something to behold.
It really shows the premise of brains vs. brawn, as Anok wants the tribe to evolve and his opponent wants none of that, as he believes it should be strength and weapons like always to battle their enemies.
There are so many mirrors held up for the audience to see and relate to. Kirkman always has a way to intertwine real life with his writing. It leaves you really thinking deeply about what you just digested.
Overall Grade: 10/10
Skinbreaker #4 might be the best issue yet in my humble opinion. It’s such a thought-provoking issue and the story stays with you well after you’re done reading it.
