Now we pick up from last issue, and Tandy and her and Tyrone’s daughter arrive to where he is. Ayla then goes and gives Tyrone a healing hug, which ends up working on him. Flex then takes Ayla, and Dagger gets to work on the creatures. The Fenris Twins then try to attack her, at which point Cloak comes in with the save.
The Military then shows up, and the twins lose their element of surprise. Cloak, Dagger, and the rest of the team regroup, and then they mention what will happen if they stay on the same plane together for too long. We then see their plan go into effect. Dagger takes on the transformed Jensen, while Cloak stops the other creatures.
After the fight, we got a preview of what would happen if Cloak & Dagger stayed on the same plane for too long. Ayla doesn’t want to go back to The Inbetween, and then Tandy and Tyrone find her. The Ferris Twins then find Cloak, Dagger, and Ayla, and then attack Cloak first, and then Dagger.
The others then show up, and the twins get beaten. Dagger stays to help, and Cloak takes Ayla home. The final panel shows Cloak & Dagger saying, “It’s Been A Long Day.”
Now, this final issue was too big to review alone, so myself and NI’s Megan and Shawn all teamed up on it, and you can see our thoughts below:
The Art
Kat: The art team really knocked it out of the park with this final issue. I loved everything about it. Adding in both Andrew’s coloring and Joe’s lettering and this issue looks beautiful.
Megan: The artists were able to take the best parts of Cloak and Dagger and bring that power to the artwork. Seeing them both play off their emotions and put it through to their powers was absolutely gorgeous. Both Cloak and Dagger are put into situations that you can see how heightened their emotions are due to their daughter, and the artists perfectly illustrated that.
Shawn: Tametta and Audino really got to stretch their skills on this issue. Through Ayla, they are able to create a level of familiarity with her abilities connecting to those of her parents while the vibrant use of colors and shifts in certain palates from those present in her parents abilities to make them different. The alternating back view shadow to front view of the Fenris twins provides a chance for the artists to highlight their abilities to convey the story in dark colors and brighter colors. The final panel does a great job flipping general color patterns used in previous Cloak and Dagger stories with Ty being framed well by the brightly colored bed while Tandy is framed by the grayish blue shadow of the sky.
The Writing
Kat: Justina has written a beautiful 3-issue mini-series. I love these characters, and seeing a completely new story with them is so awesome. I cannot wait to see what the future is for these characters.
Megan: Justina Ireland brought a beautiful story of love and support to the dystopian world in the Age of Revelation. There’s layers upon layers of the love the two main characters have for each other, their daughter, and the great good. I’m disappointed to see this story come to an end, but would really love to see Ireland return to writer for Cloak and Dagger.
Shawn: Cloak or Dagger continues to show us a new dimension to familiar characters. Ireland adds new depth to the characters, providing the background from the revelation in Cloak or Dagger 1 that the two have a child. She taps into a real struggle that every parent goes through in trying to find the balance between letting your kids experience the world and protecting them from it. In doing so she finds a way to humanize superheroes in a new way.
Overall Grade – 9.5/10
Kat: 10/10
Megan: 10/10
Shawn: 8.5/10
Final Thoughts
Kat: Justina and her team have taken 2 characters and made them amazing. Cloak & Dagger have returned to Marvel Comics with a bang. I’m so excited to see their future in the comics.
Megan: Seeing what Justina Ireland did with Cloak and Dagger during such a dark time in the Marvel Universe was pitch perfect and hit all the right notes. This is a must have on everyone’s pull list!
Shawn: I’m a long-time Cloak and Dagger fan from their days of Strange Tales with Doctor Strange. Ireland’s entry provides some new life and allows us to see Tandy and Ty in a whole new role and dynamic.
