The Story

When all things seem to be going Olive’s way, we know that never stays that way. Olive is over the moon with excitement as she’s been asked to the prom by her boyfriend. While she is looking forward to it, her nerves are growing larger by the minute. Olive doesn’t know why, but she has a bad feeling. It could be because the school bullies blame her and her boyfriend for their expulsion, but the matter of the fact is that those kids got caught on their own.

Olive’s boyfriend does what he can to calm her nerves to make sure she has a magical evening, which is admirable. The prom could be absolutely perfect, especially since Olive is up for Prom Princess. However, it could go terribly wrong. The bad feeling is growing larger and larger and the prom is starting to feel like a horrible idea.

The writers continue to impress with this story that’s wrapped in uncertainty, mystery, trauma, and resilience. Olive is a character who, although she comes from trauma, puts one foot in front of the other in an attempt to have the happy life she deserves. But with a life surrounded by darkness for its entirety, she can’t escape what’s kept her a prisoner for the majority of her life.

The Art

The artwork in Gotham Academy: Year Old #3 is superb in all ways. The artists really capture the looming feeling of mystery while showcasing Olive’s differing emotions throughout the comic. What I truly enjoyed was the gradual yet dramatic transformation into the darkness while Olive was at the prom. It went from innocent fun to extreme fear wrapped in trauma from Olive, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. Well done to the artists, yet again!

Final Thoughts

If you haven’t checked out Gotham Academy: Year One, it’s never too late! With a story riddled with mystery, darkness, and emotions as high as Batman can perch looking for crime, this should be on everyone’s pull list.

Overall Grade – 9/10
