The Story

Things seem to be looking up for Olive at the Gotham Academy after she’s been in such a low place. She has a boyfriend named Kyle, she has made friends with her roommate, her grades are high, and her mom looks to be back to her old self. She even got to spend the holiday weekend with her boyfriend’s family, who absolutely adored her. Everything is turning around for Olive, but can it last?

When she goes to Arkham Asylum to tell her mom about her fantastic weekend, that’s when something just isn’t right. The asylum is in the process of locking down, and the security tells Olive that she needs to leave immediately. Scared and confused, Olive just wants to see her mom, so she goes searching for her. Once she finds her mom, everything starts to turn.

Gotham Academy: First Year #2 shows that even though Olive’s life is getting better and better, she can’t escape the dark cloud that seems to follow her mother. There’s clearly so much more happening that Olive doesn’t realize or understand, but with the cliffhanger we’re left on, it seems she will found out soon enough.

The writers of the story perfectly keep you on your toes as you can see Olive’s life is improving, but you just know the other shoe is about to drop. The happiness from Olive is felt from the reader, but your heart drops once things take a big turn.

The Art

Marco Ferrari handles the art of Gotham Academy: First Year #2, and does it exceedingly well. Ferrari is able to perfectly match the tone changes of the story with the art, that makes the emotions of the story feel all the more powerful. Eva De La Cruz handles the colors of the comic and works very well with contrasting colors that make certain panels pop off the page. There’s no other word to describe the flashback panels of the night of the fire than stunning. Ferrari and De La Cruz bring an abstract look accompanied by vibrant colors that makes the scenes feel even more powerful.

Steve Wands is the letterer of Gotham Academy: First Year #2, and unsurprisingly so, delivers high quality work throughout the comic. Creating an even flow of dialogue, and making you feel the emotions of the words clearly, Wands gives each sentence its own power.

Final Thoughts

Gotham Academy: First Year #2 has me hooked! I can’t wait to see what’s next for Olive in this chaotic life of hers.

Overall Grade – 9/10
