The Story for SUPERNATURAL #2

Lauren: It’s the annual Vegas trip BABY! While we only got a glimpse of Vegas in the show, that was quickly ruined by Becky and the future Aaron Burr, sir (nod to Leslie Odom Jr. in the episode: It’s Time for a Wedding). This trip takes us back to season 1, and Dean is getting lucky at the table. However, it’s not his rain man skills that are bringing him luck. It appears to be Sam’s new friend, and she needs a favor.

Matt: This issue felt like a classic episode of Supernatural where the focus was more light-hearted and all around fun. Greg is a fan, as he’s able to bring Sam and Dean to life and transport us back to a time when the brothers were much more innocent than we remember. The show was never able to bring us to bigger cities, so Greg being able to bring them to a place such as Las Vegas is a creative way to keep things fresh and deliver a story we haven’t seen before!

The Art

Lauren: The art is not only taking us places we couldn’t go in the show, it also helps deliver the Sam and Dean so many of us fell in love with. While the show did go to Vegas during their 15 year span, we didn’t actually see Vegas. Well this comic finally showed us Dean in his happy place. We also perfectly see Sam give his nervous shy smile that works so well (until it doesn’t…spoilers).

These comic book versions of Sam and Dean truly feel like their 2005/2006 selves in story and art. Additionally, I love the almost retro comic feel we got at times. It seemed to highlight Sam’s new friend in more ways that one.

Matt: The art team manages to capture the little details we often forgot from the early days of Dean and, more importantly, Sam. His hairstyles changed ever so slightly, but this period was a time when his hair was certainly something else to which they were able to capture on the pages. Ellie brought the rustic and smelly decor to life with the coloring in each panel in the casino. At times it was as if I was at a cads table myself in Vegas, and it brought back a ton of memories from the few times I have been there.

Overall Grade: 8.75/10

Lauren: 8.5/10. In true Supernatural fashion, we got an opener, and a blood spatter before we had a clue what was going on. Which then wrapped up with a twist. As someone who fell hard in love with this show, I’m loving that we’re filling in more backstory, and I can’t wait to see where the boys go next, on the road so far.

Matt: 9/10. Supernatural #2 continues the adventures of Sam and Dean Winchester while taking us to new territory and bringing back the familiar vibe and feeling of the show we fell in love with!
