The Story

Megan – There’s no other word to describe this Batman run other than “thrilling” and the third installment continues that theme. With the cops attempting to arrest Robin, Batman leaps in the get Robin out of the situation just in time. However, that doesn’t mean Batman and Robin are in the clear, because Savage has set his focus on Batman. Savage plants evidence pointing towards Batman at the scene of the crime, which would paint the Gotham vigilante as a cop killer.

Meanwhile, a Dr. Zeller has created something that’s problematic to say the least. Her invention could very well be made with good intentions, but it becomes very obvious with the help of The Riddler that there’s a much darker plan at play.

Matt Fraction does it again! He pulls you into his story, and makes you want to stay there until the very last page when you’re asking for more. What I really admire is how much he’s able to fit into one comic book while keeping it even with a healthy flow. There’s so much going on in Gotham and in Bruce Wayne’s life in this series, and Fraction is expertly keeping us hooked into the story of it all.

Matt – I cannot quite put my finger on it but, this version of Batman is different in a good way. He is ever menacing as always but, there is some compassion almost that oozes from in various parts such when it comes to how he deals with the villains in this universe. You can feel the pity Bruce has for Edward as Fraction writes him in a brutal and yet soft manner.

Fraction is working on something with Gotham City, and Dr. Zeller is at the heart of it. We get a taste of it at the end of this book as Matt gives us just enough to bring us to the edge of our seats, leaving us chomping at the bit. There’s alot of detective work going on in this run and I love every second of it.

The Art

Megan – Jorge Jiménez brings so much depth to the pages of Batman #3, it really puts you into the pages. Each panel is created with an excellent amount of details, which isn’t surprising given how talented Jiménez with his drawings. What I love about Batman #3 is how expressive the characters are drawn with their facial expressions. Seeing their emotions plainly on their faces makes you feel the tone of the story even more so, which keeps you hooked.

Alongside Jiménez is Tomeu Morey, who handles the colors of the comic. His use of muted tones juxtaposing the vibrant details makes the panels pop off the page. An excellent job from the creative team!

Matt – Jiménez captures the soul of this city that is bracing for impact. We can feel the tensions pulling at characters, such as the panel with Zeller and Hugo Strange, and then the details on Bruce’s face, with everyone having these intense emotions drawn very intensely. The final page may be my favorite as the Batmobile is racing through Gotham’s streets and Jorge shows off the life he breathes through various colors on buildings and lights shining into the night sky in this city. HE continues to make Gotham City its own character as it should be.
