Cloak & Dagger Are Back. Writer Justina Ireland, Artist Lorenzo Tammetta, Colorist Andrew Dalhouse, and Letterer Joe Caramagna made a beautiful first issue.
The Story

We kick off in St. Louis at the edge of The Revelation Zone. Dagger comes flying in, and Captain Jensen is letting her know what is happening. She and Scritch then make a plan to stop the Rider. From there, Dagger and Scritch attack, and it’s amazing to see.
We then see more attacks, and at this point, Dagger calls in backup in the form of Cloak. He then comes flying in, and it is really a sight to behold. He then proceeds to defeat everyone, and then an ambush proceeds to happens. We then see our villains of the book, and they kill a soldier.
Cloak then loses contact with the convoy, and he, Scritch, and Flex go after it. Meanwhile, Dagger is rescuing people. Back at Haven, Cloak and the team are trying to figure out the next steps. Then, we cut to our villains, and they took an entire bus hostage. We then see an explosion from inside the bus.
We jump back to Haven, and Dagger is trying to figure out what to do next. Her and Colonel Ramirez then have a conversation, followed by a soldier walking in with a hit on Jensen’s location. The team heads to the location and sees the exploded bus. The team then finds Jensen, and he has been mutated by the virus.
We then head to Cloak and Dagger’s house, and Tyrone, AKA Cloak, is working on getting their daughter asleep. He gets into bed with her and starts to read her a story. We then cut to New Elysium, and our villains head inside. The final panel shows their plan for finding more converts.
Now, this was way too exciting of a comic to review alone, so myself and NI’s Megan reviewed it together, and you can see our thoughts below:
The Art
Kat: Lorenzo Tammetta did an amazing job with this first issue. His art is amazing, and really helps tell this story. Add in Andrew’s coloring work and Joe’s lettering, and the story comes together.
Megan: Lorenzo Tammetta always delivers when he’s the artist of the comic, and Cloak or Dagger #1 is no exception. With beautiful looks at powersets, powerful expressions from the characters, and an immense amount of attention paid to the details, Tammetta makes a gorgeous comic that matches the fantastic story. Andrew Dalhouse is the colorist of the comic and creates the story dripping in juxtaposition which is so authentic to Cloak and Dagger. There are some panels that showcase Dalhouse’s talents beautifully and I’d have to do with Cloak.
Joe Caramagna is the letterer of Cloak or Dagger #1 and creates an even flow of dialogue throughout the comic, and ensures the dialogue matches the tone perfectly. Together, the artists really nailed it, which isn’t surprising given who the team is made up of.
The Writing
Kat: Justina’s story is amazing. Just one issue in, and we are already set up for the rest of the series. This comic is going to be very fun to read.
Megan: Justina Ireland creates a story that’s riddled with action, high stakes, and tragedy from the effects of the X-Virus. The fact that Cloak and Dagger can no longer be in each other’s presence more than a few minutes is ridiculously sad, but the heroes make it work to work towards a better tomorrow. The back and forth help Cloak and Dagger give each other was handled perfectly by Justina, as well as the story as a whole. Justina Ireland made her mark in the Age of Revelation event in a big way and I can’t wait to see what’s next! I’ll be excitedly waiting for the next issue!
Overall Grade: 9.5/10
Kat: 10/10
I love these characters, and this comic expands my love for them. I’m so excited to see Cloak & Dagger back in Marvel Comics. This series is going to be so much fun.
Megan: 9/10
I loved so much about Cloak or Dagger #1, and it’s all thanks to the creative team. The stakes were high, the devastation from the X-Virus was real, and the action was top notch!
