‘Gen V’ Season 2 Episode 8 – The “Trojan” Horse We Never Knew We Needed

Published:

Season 2 of ‘GEN V‘ from the world of ‘The Boys,’ just wrapped up season two with an epically awesome and big ass finale. This season has had so many ups and downs, while continually unfolding more mysteries. The finale, “Trojan” beautifully tied up Marie’s past, as well as gave us some history surrounding Godolkin U and Vought. While ‘Gen V’ has been a story all its own, this finale also did a fantastic job setting up the final season of ‘The Boys.’

WARNING: While my past reviews have been spoiler free, this is NOT. SPOILERS ahead for all of ‘Gen V’ Season 2. Including the Finale: “Trojan.”

In the last episode, Hell Week, we learned that Annabeth saw her parent’s death before it happened. A guilt she has carried around for years. While her supe power has left her with just guilt in the past, now it’s helpful.

It helps her and the rest of the kids catch up to Cate and Marie, after being (unnecessarily) left behind. However, Marie doesn’t exactly warmly welcome them back.

Marie is tapping into her full potential, which she has definitely let go to her head a bit. Having learned to heal people in ways she couldn’t have imagined in season 1, this gift has proven to be quite useful. It is also detrimental. She was able to stop Polarity’s seizures, and heal his brain.

However, while she won’t heal Cate, the ignorance of youth causes her to also heal the old guy at Dean Cipher‘s. He’s Thomas Godolkin, and they believe he’s the key to taking down Dean Cipher, Homelander, Vought, and Godolkin U.

Unfortunately, Godolkin truly just wants to make America Super Super Again. Only the worthy in his mind should survive, and he starts by taking out a supe student just trying to pledge an incredibly toxic fraternity.

With Godolkin healed, we meet Doug. Poor sweet Doug. Marie sensed there was no V in Dean Cipher’s blood, and now we’ve learned why. “Dean Cipher’s” body was simply a marionette named Doug, living in hell for years.

Trojan

We kick off the finale right where we kicked off the season 2 pilot. It’s 1967 and the song “You’re just too good to be true” by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons is playing (which no one can convince me isn’t a nod to Supernatural, I mean it’s 1967 and the song says, “I love you baby”). We see Godolkin stab himself with V and burn.

Back in the present we get to know Doug a bit more, and he catches us up. Godolkin took the same V as Stormfront and Soldier Boy, which is why he hasn’t aged. We also learn Doug was Godolkin’s second puppet. As Polarity takes Doug to safety, he gives something to Polarity. It’s something he needed more than anything: some peace about his son’s death.

He tells Polarity how brave, and good Andre was, and that he would have been proud. Of course, just as we fall in love with this new character, Black Noir shows up. Good bye Doug. Polarity is spared as Noir fan boys over him.

Meanwhile, Godolkin, no longer having to watch someone else have sex on his behalf, is enjoying his sudden recovery. Which now makes that one past sex scene with Cipher and Sage, less creepy AND also more creepy. Poor Doug. Sex, food, and control of his own bodily functions, Godolkin is glad to be back. He’s ready to kill more mediocre supes.

Ignoring Sage’s advice (the literal smartest person in the world), he sets his plan in motion in the most 2025 way possible. He goes live on social media, and lets all the Godolkin U students know that rankings have been reset and it’s now anyone’s game. Just come to his seminar.

Despite the best efforts of Marie and friends, people still go. Seminar invites are sent to the “unworthy” supes and those who have abused their powers (in different ways than Godolkin). As he challenges the students, he is simply killing them.

A Trojan horse plan is devised. The supe power that has shown up more often than necessary this season is suddenly put to good use. Emma, Jordan, Cate, and more go up the ass of Black Hole who has regularly been seen this season possibly giving everyone pink eye. His is a power, Godolkin clearly does not approve of.

Once inside, out the ass they all come. Harper absorbs Godolkin’s power, but Marie takes too long to take him out. They save the others but then he controls Marie. Until a recently released Polarity (thanks to a Sage that seems to have given up) shows up and gives Marie another chance.

Together, they take down Godolkin with a head popping finish. For Andre. The hope was that Godolkin could control Homelander, and put a stop to him. Instead in the end Marie put a stop to Godolkin. Vought is coming, so Polarity uses his dad voice, and tells the kids to leave!

You can’t just pop the head of newly resurrected Godolkin and go on with your day. So off they go. Marie, Jordan, Emma, Sam, Cate, and Annabeth leave, only to be stopped by A-Train and Starlight. The kids are asked if they want to join the resistance. Starlight may have fallen for the evidence Sage planted, but they didn’t. Together they merge, and A-Train calls them rebels. A Star Wars finish to another awesome and out of control season of Gen V.

An F-ed up Family

Trauma can bring people together, and this group of college kids has seen quite a bit of trauma in their lives. As per Emma they are a “f***** up family.” I have loved every scene Emma has been in. Lizze Broadway, brought so much truth, humor, and levity to this season.

She’s hilariously honest, and incredibly self aware. Making her probably the most emotionally intelligent person in this universe. She explains how they work better together as she calls Marie on her crap. Which in turn caused Marie to fix Cate.

Part of their shared trauma is losing Andre. Chance Perdomo was set to return as Andre Anderson in ‘GEN V’ season 2. However, he unexpectedly passed away & changes needed to be made. While, I have no idea what the original idea was, the changes seem to have added a level of humanity to the story.

In a world where fast growing pubes are a super power, they still managed to beautifully honor both Andre and Chance. This wasn’t done with one line, one scene, or a quick catch up. It was done the entire season. His presence was always felt. Especially whenever Andre’s father, Polarity, was on screen.

Overall Grade: 9/10

While I thought it was clear somewhat early on that Godolkin was the old guy at Dean Cipher’s I never imaged Dean Cipher was essentially Godolkin. That was a hell of a fun twist. I also continue to be impressed with the level of disgusting in this universe that then becomes incredibly relevant.

From an ass eating scene to a pink eye advantage in ‘The Boys’ to the most disgusting version of the Trojan horse ever imagined. Kudos to the disgustingly creative minds behind these shows. While I find myself turning my head in every episode, I’ve never once considered turning it off. That is true talent on part of the writing team.

My only pet peeve this season was Marie and Jordan. I wanted that power couple, not a ‘will they/won’t they’ storyline. Outside of that, this season was everything I wanted and more. If I wasn’t already hyped enough for season 5 of ‘The Boys’ and the upcoming prequel ‘Vought Rising’ I’m definitely at max hype-ness now!
