The Protector

Racer X knows the moves of all the power players and criminals that benefit the most from Formula X Racing. These underworld figures are known as Smart Money, and they cheat to make sure they can make the most off their gambling. After Pops attack, Racer X uses all his knowledge of the Smart Money process to make substantial amounts of cash. However, this cash is to ensure that his brother Speed Racer can continue to race and make the money needed for their father. But, before Racer X gives Speed the money, Speed must prove he has what it takes to win in Formula X.

Testing the Next Great Racer

This issue really dives into the emotional motivations behind Racer X. Mark Russell does a great job of bringing Racer X’s familial ties and drive to the forefront, which really makes the reader feel for him. Russell also brings the excitement of the racing action for some great entertainment. This issue is emotionally driven so it gets a little heavy and wordy at times, this is not to the detriment of the story though.

The art in this issue is very good and is what we have been accustomed to since the launch of this Speed Racer Universe. Nuno Plati really lands the anime inspiration of the series, well updating it to a modern comic feel. The racing panels are really cool and put the reader in the middle of the action. Giada Marchisio does an excellent job with the color selections, which make the art pop in every panel.

Final Thoughts

Racer X #2 does a great job of moving the Racer X story forward, well further connecting it to what’s going on in the main run of Speed Racer. It’s the true definition of a spin off because its entire goal is to give extra context and knowledge the reader needs for the main story. If you haven’t checked out the Speed Racer line, this is a good opportunity to jump in and check it out.

Overall Grade: 8/10
