Captain America #4 – The Threat From Within

Published:

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I’m going to be reviewing the 4th issue of Captain America from Marvel Comics!

Captain America is deep inside Latveria and has come face to face with none other than Doctor Doom himself! But what exactly happens when there’s another threat that comes from within? Let’s jump into it!

Captain America #4 by Chip Zdarsky (Writer), Valerio Schiti (Artist), Frank Martin (Color Artist) & VC’s Joe Caramanga (Letterer) is a tremendous issue with a wild plot twist at the end that I have to admit I didn’t see coming!

The Story

Chip Zdarsky has penned an absolute masterpiece with this issue, and it’s truly one you need to experience for yourself. It starts off fairly simply enough, after a flashback sequence we see Doom is on a makeshift stage debating the differences between Democracy & his way of doing things. It really makes for some compelling reading.

However it doesn’t last long as Captain America quickly appears with the declaration, “Nobody else dies today. Not while I stand and breathe!” From there things kick into high gear with a battle between Captain America & his teammates against the Doom’s forces.

The real twist comes at the end of the issue, and I don’t want to spoil it here. It really is a heck of a twist that I didn’t see coming. Just when I thought Captain America & crew might be getting a leg up on things, everything got flipped on it’s head.

It’s going to be extremely interesting to see where things go next. As things have now taken a turn to a less than ideal state for our heroes. We obviously know Captain America & Doom’s future, this is taking place in the past from the present time of the comics. However that doesn’t mean they won’t come out of things perfectly fine.

The Artwork

Valerio Schiti & Frank Martin continue to do a spectacular job with the artwork in this issue. It’s got such a classic feel to it, despite the colors giving it a modern look throughout the issue. The battle between Captain America & Doctor Doom at the end of the issue particularly stood out to me in scale & how well it was drawn. Also that last page might be the coolest one I’ve seen in some time.

FINAL POINT: Chip Zdarsky is penning one of the most must read stories of the modern era for Captain America. Every issue is compelling, and this one is no different. Together with tremendous artwork from Valerio & Frank make this an issue you absolutely cannot miss!

Overall Grade: 9.5/10
