The Story

To prove just how big of an impact the X-Men: Age of Revelation has had on the Marvel universe, Carol Danvers enters the chat. As Jean Grey is dead, and the Phoenix Force is apart of Carol now, she dons the iconic identity of Binary. When the X-Virus swept the nation thanks to courtesy of a gene bomb, Binary fled to her hometown.

She used her powers to create a barrier around the town and its people to keep them safe. Now, ten years into the Age of Revelation, the townsfolk has had enough of being “trapped” in this bubble of safety, and have turned on Carol. Carol doesn’t know if she has done the right thing.

All she knows is that, without her, the virus would’ve spread through the town, and if she leaves the town, then her barriers go with her. Her morals are pulling her one way, and the Phoenix Force along with the townspeople are pulling her in an entirely different way.

Leave it to Stephanie Phillips to bring in an emotional chapter of the X-Men: Age of Revelation event! There was a great tension that filled the comic between Carol and the people of her hometown, but also a hidden tension between her and the Phoenix Force. Alongside that battle of emotions, there’s also an interesting plan forming behind the scenes against Carol that she’s none of the wiser to. All in all, I’m very excited to see where this goes and how it’ll all play into the larger story at hand.

The Art

Giada Beluiso, the artist of Binary #1, was all gas and no breaks when it comes to how hard hitting the artwork was. With some beautiful action panels showcasing Carol in her powerful Binary glory, Beluiso goes out of their way to show just how powerful Carol is. Something else I really appreciated was the portrayal of emotion that Beluiso was able to put on display by the characters, more specifically Carol. With the deep feelings she’s experiences throughout Binary #1, you can see the emotion easily on her face, in her actions, and in her words. Stephanie Phillips and Giada Beluiso work brilliantly together and Binary #1 is proof of that.

Along with Belusio is Rachelle Rosenberg, who handles the colors. To say that Rosenberg gave it her all would be an understatement, and an unsurprising understatement at that. If you want quality work in making the pages of a comic seem larger than life with the use of juxtaposing colors and perfect attention paid to the details, then you involve Rachelle Rosenberg.

Overall Grade – 9.5/10

I didn’t know what to expect going into Binary #1, but I new it would be good given the creative team. It’s an excellent addition to the thrilling X-Men: Age of Revelation event!
