HYDE STREET #9: Doctor Ego is in the office!

Published:

Step into the world of Hyde Street, where we are transported back to 1946 and meet Doctor Ego. Just what makes him tick and so terrifying? Be careful, once you enter Hyde Street, there is no escape.

Hyde Street #9 by Geoff Johns, Francis Portela, Brad Anderson, Ivan Reis, and Rob Leigh (Credit Image Comics and Ghost Machine. Cover by Ivan Reis and Danny Miki.)

Creative Team:

Geoff Johns (CREATOR/WRITER), Ivan Reis (CREATOR/COVER), Francis Portela (ARTIST), Brad Anderson (COLORS), Rob Leigh (LETTERS), and Danny Miki (COVER).

The Story:

This issue serves as a cautionary tale. We often see in reality, that many are convinced they will never be perfect and often desire more. Geoff weaves a twisted tale, building from the past, and as he takes us through this issue, our stomachs begin to twist and churn as this growing sense of dread builds.

There is a clever “ah ha!” moment as we learn the origin of not only Doctor Ego but, his two assistants that fell victim to his works as well. This entire issue is perfection and is exactly what horror should be.

Geoff and Ivan both ensure that we are left with more questions as there is quite the cliffhanger moment that sets us up for something big. I did enjoy the addition of a certain famous actress in this issue as well!

The Art and Letters:

Francis, Brad, and Ivan do a lot of detailed work that assists in building the sense of dread I felt with each panel. There are subtle details, such as blood being spattered on the lights and bandages. The details of what we would come to discover to be Marilyn Monroe and the fear and sorrow in her eyes were absolutely a chef’s kiss. Plastic surgery is something that has always scared me, and the artwork is not shying away from how grotesque it can be, brought about by squeamish panels all at the same time. The art and Rob’s work with the letters will make you uncomfortable, and it is perfection.

Final Thoughts: 9/10

The more we learn about Hyde Street and its residents, the more dread and horrifying this story becomes. This is how horror books should be done, and this issue made me feel the most uncomfortable out of any previous ones. I need more, and you should be putting this at the top of your list this spooky season!
