The Story and Writing
Jason Todd has moved out of Gotham and found his new home to be New Angelique. He left behind Batman and his relationship with Batman behind in Gotham. It still keeps him up at night how it all went down between them.
In short, Jason comes to New Angelique with plenty of baggage, but he’s determined that this is his new home and he will start a new life.
What better way to start a new life than to sniff out the crime in the city? In New Angelique, Jason is hard at work looking into what can only be described as a serial killer. The serial killer in question is targeting cops, currently employed by the police force and retired.
What’s strange is that each victim has the same actions, the victim says “the tower says hello” then pulls the trigger. Jason knows this because the video is put up online of these killings, and no matter how often they’re taken down off the internet, a new one pops up and every single one trace back to the hot and muggy New Angelique.
Gretchen Felker-Martin gives an incredibly strong start to this new comic series all centered around Jason Todd. There are great callbacks to Jason’s life in Gotham, and where he stands emotionally with Batman currently. Also, there’s a good amount of action in Red Hood #1, where Jason gets to show just how powerful his fighting skills are by being put to the test.
Alongside Jason, we get to see Huntress in the story, who I hope we get to see a lot more of. With them both being members of the Bat Family and Gotham natives, I think working with Huntress is exactly what Jason needs to work through his feelings of leaving Gotham and Batman behind.
The Art
Jeff Spokes, the artist of Red Hood #1, perfectly matched the tone of the story to the art itself. Giving artwork that delivers the perfect amount of grittiness and darkness, Spokes elevated the already fantastic storyline to new heights. Some of my favorite part were the panels that were drenched in action, showing what a powerhouse Jason Todd is on his own. Jason starting his new life of crime fighting in New Angelique was perfectly illustrated all thanks to Spokes.
Alongside pokes is Becca Carey, who handles the lettering for Red Hood #1. Carey goes far and beyond to create a nice flow through the dialogue of the comic, while giving every word importance. Unsurprisingly, Carey delivers high quality works as always.
Overall Grade – 9.5/10
Gretchen Felker-Martin delivers a great story about the new life of Jason Todd. Red Hood #1 has the grittiness you love from the Batman comics, the action you’re excited to see in DC Comics, and a killer storyline that leaves you wanting to read so much more. With a great amount of mystery surrounding the story, it’s hard not to sit anxiously while waiting for the next issue to drop.
