Imperial War: Nova: Centurion #1 – Cover – Mark Bagley & Nolan Woodard (Marvel)

The Story:

While the Galactic leaders continue to try to unravel the mysterious assassinations of their leaders, Nova, Star-Lord, and Shuri travel to Xandar in order for Richard Rider to reconnect with the Xandrarian World Mind. While this is not a reunion Nova was looking forward to, he must put aside his fears if he hopes to find who is really pulling the strings of this plot.

The Writing:

The history between Nova and the World Mind is deep and full of horrors and frustration. Hickman and MacKay put so much of that history into this issue that it felt like the direct continuation of Nova’s story from years ago. The dynamic between Nova and the World Mind was perfectly written and each of their interactions played out exactly how I wanted them to. There was a real humanity to the way Richard Rider was written here and his sadness and desperation was captured and displayed perfectly. Richard Rider is not an easy character to take on because of that deep sadness. However, this writing team were clearly up to the task.

The Art:

The art team got to really flex their muscle in this issue. Eldritch horrors, desperate heroes, and cosmic visuals were all on display to showcase just what this team could do. The settings in this issue were wonderful. The standout for me was an endless field of graves that had an intense weight and sadness and it really helped showcase where Nova was emotionally and mentally. The pain and anguish on Nova’s face was so gritty and raw that I could feel it as I read this issue. Each page was excellent and, of course, the cover was phenomenal as has been the case with each of these Imperial War titles.

Overall Grade: 10/10

This is exactly the book I’ve been waiting for! I am a huge fan of Nova and the Nova Corps, and this issue scratched that itch in the best possible way. The history and interactions, the emotion and turmoil, they were all accented by fantastic artwork and an exciting ending that set up where the story will go from here. I am loving this event and I can’t wait to see what happens next. This was a wonderful return for one of my favorite Marvel characters. Marvel, please, I’m begging you. Please give us an ongoing Nova book! This issue proves that there is so much story and so many places this character can go.
