The Story:
On the Shi’Ar home world, the Imperial Guard have risen up in an attempt to overthrow the Majestrix, Xandra. Her only hope for survival is in a group of renegades led by her father, Charles Xavier and her resurrected mother, Lalandra.
The Writing:
There is a lot going on in this issue. Multiple cuts from the past to the present, a huge cast of character, and a tie in to the larger plot of Imperial all have to come together to create a cohesive story. Thankfully, the writing team of Steve Foxe and Jonathan Hickman were able to pull it off.
While I’m not as familiar with the Shi’Ar Empire as I am with other portions of the Marvel Universe, I was able to follow along without getting lost and have a good time reading this. Tie-Ins can be tricky to get right, and this was the one I was looking forward to the least. However, I’m very happy with this writing team and I’m excited to check out where this story goes in the future.
The Art:

The art team had the same amount of the storytelling burden in this issue as the writing team. They had to deal with a huge amount of characters, and maintain the visual differences in the time jumps.
The line work, inks, and colors all worked together to make this issue a beautiful masterpiece of sci-fi comic book goodness. The Imperial War covers have been fantastic and this issue does not buck that trend. Wonderful art all around with this book.
Overall Grade: 9/10
While I was not looking forward to this issue as much as the others in this line, I was pleasantly surprised with the depth of story and drama.
The action was wonderful, the emotion was on point, and the set up for the upcoming Exiles book has me excited to check it out. This is another win for the Imperial War story overall.
