Imperial War: Black Panther #1

Cover – Francesco Mortarino & Raul Angulo
The Story:
On the run from a rampaging Hulk, Black Panther must convince the empires attacking Wakanda Prime to agree to a temporary ceasefire in order to discover the true enemy.
The Writing:
Jonathan Hickman and Victor LaVelle delivered a perfectly paced and wildly entertaining story. This tie-in fits right along side of the main Imperial story, filling in the gaps nicely. Black Panther’s inner monologue puts the reader right in the mind of the Wakandan leader and it really helps to get a sense of where he is mentally.

The characterization of the other cosmic characters was on point, with each leader acting exactly how I expected them to. The mystery that is driving the main Imperial story is chipped away nicely in this issue, keeping me hungry for more.
Also, Black Panther is just awesome in this issue, not he isn’t usually, but the intense stare down of the other leaders from this human king was so much fun to read.
The Art:
The art team turned in a wonderful issue. The action was great, the tension was intense (see what I did there?), and the settings were diverse and beautiful. The Hulk was imposing and scary, bowling over Skrulls without a problem.
The emotion that this team was able to capture even though Black Panther’s face is covered was beyond impressive.
I was able to feel the frustration, pride, and anger without seeing his face. The cover continues the theme of the Imperial books with a great minimalist design that is really working for me!
Overall Grade: 10/10
Imperial has been such an incredible ride so far and this book just added to my enjoyment of the story. The twists, action, and mystery are on full display and this issue is just an absolute delight!
