Closer is a one-shot from Image Comics by Kieron Gillen, Steve Lieber, Tamra Bonvillain, and Clayton Cowles. Honestly, it grabbed me right from the start. It’s weird, emotional, and kind of beautiful in a totally unexpected way. Think: The Carpenters’ “(They Long to Be) Close to You” turned into a sci-fi comic with a bit of an apocalyptic twist. Sounds strange? It is. But it works.

The story follows Marigold Dunwoody, who shows up at what looks like some kind of clinic. She’s stressed out, clearly not into this, but she needs the money. From there, things get real weird, real fast.
What starts out as quick money, turns into something way more personal and she slowly realizes the whole experiment is about her. There’s a lot of mystery, some emotional gut punches, and a vibe that just pulls you in.

Gillen’s writing is super tight and he gets a full story in one issue without rushing anything. Lieber’s art keeps your eyes moving, always dropping little hints about what’s coming next and Bonvillain’s colors really help sell the mood, especially when things start getting trippy.
What I love most is how well it all comes together. The story, the art, the concept, everything just clicks. It’s a one-shot that actually feels complete, but still leaves you wanting more (in a good way). I’d kill for two more issues, honestly.
OVERALL GRADE: 8.5/10
If you’re into emotional sci-fi, weird love stories, or just want to see a song turned into a comic in the coolest way possible, give Closer a shot. And yeah definitely listen to the song while you read.
